Are the Vortex Vipers as good as the Zeiss Conquest and Swarovski CL?

I'm looking for a middle tier pair of glass. I've done a lot of research and shopping and have read tons of reviews on a number of different websites(including this one). From all of this I keep coming back to one conclusion, the Vortex Vipers are the best option.

I really like that they are covered with the VIP warranty, are at a great price point and they look great.

My two main question are: Are they truly comparable to the Zeiss and Swarovski midrange glass?
How important is it to look through each pair?

I have a pair of the vipers. While I can't speak for the quality of the swarovski or zeiss, I personally really like them. My eyes don't feel strained after looking through them for a long period of time.

Neve had a Zeiss or Swarovski but I love my Vortex Viper. I have a couple Leupold VX-III's as well and much prefer the Vortex. For the money they are hard to beat.

It's all in the eye of the individual. I keep looking at Vortex optics in the stores and they just don't cut it. You really need to take your choices and look at them side by side.

Quality input. I think I'll end up having to go and do a comparison before I purchase a pair.

What kind of glass do you have sslinger?
My Spotting scope is a Meopta Meostar HD, and I love it. I'm upgrading bino's this offseason. I've looked through Swarovski SLC, Zeiss Conquest Hd, and Vortex Razors. I'm still wanting to check out the Meopta Meostar HD and see the review by Bitteroot Bulls on the Maven's. I hope to have a decision by May.

I have a pair of Vortex and for the money I doubt you can beat them. If price is a concern then you need to seriously consider them. I fell on a hunt this past fall and scratched the lens on one side as well as I bent the focus adjuster. I sent them in and they completely repaired them at no cost to me. How can you beat that.

Just looked thru a pair of Swarovski CL pocket 8x25. All I can see is "holy crap awesome" couldn't believe how clear they were.

It sounds like you are comparing binoculars.

These are my thoughts:

1. The first thing to realize is that if everybody saw things identically, we would have a consensus on what is better than what in optics. This consensus doesn't exist, so there is some individual preference in evaluating optics. Some people prefer contrast, some resolution, some brightness, some other optical properties. Each optical design is different on how it accounts for each.

2. Sample variation is something to remember. Within every particular model, there are "cherry" specimens and "lemon" specimens. Above all else, I think this is where most disagreements can be traced back to. When you decide on a particular optic to buy, I would do my best to check out a few samples to find a "cherry."

3. In optics, some things are independant of opinion: These are things like distortion (in the proper optics use of the word), aberration control (chromatic and spherical aberration particularly), field curvature, and field of view. A good review usually identifies these qualities as well as the reviewers general opinions.

The Viper HDs are pretty competitive, IMO, although the FOV isn't really wide. For their price range, I have a hard time finding something better, especially considering the warranty. Make sure to find a good unit.

The Conquest HD is a quality, well-built binocular, with very good center-field performance, but struggles with CA at the edge. Meopta has a similar binocular called the MeoPRO HD which performs similarly with a wider FOV and softer edge.

The Razor HD also a quality binocular that has similar centerfield performance which degrades towards the edge, with some field curvature affecting edge performance.

The Meopta Meostar HD is my reference binocular for 10X42s with no real optical or build weaknesses. I replaced my previous reference standard Swarovski SLC neus with this model. I have also used a number of copies of this design and find it consistently excellent. It is the only mid-priced binocular I have tested that I would put on the same shelf as the flagship binoculars from Leica, Zeiss, and Swarovski. That is my opinion, and I don't mean to say that it is exactly equal to or superior to those models, but it certainly at least compares.

I have just started evalutating the Mavens, so it is too early to say on them.

Hope that helps.

That was a thorough explanation Bitterroot. Its much appreciated and your opening statement about different views is very truthful.

It's clear to me that I'm going to need to do some comparison in a store to get a true answer and find which glass is right for me.

Thanks again.

Thanks for always giving an honest review on glass that isn't a brand loyalty add. We all appreciate and respect your opinions regarding glass.

Don't overlook the Leica Trinovid or ultra vid. My eyes like them better than my SLCs or Zeiss Victory fl I've had in the past. That's what works best for me...

Is the Cabela's Euro HD the same as the Meopta Meostar HD? I have the Viper HD 10x42 and they're good, but thinking of upgrading to better.

I don?t know if they are the exact same, but pretty sure there is a partnership.

The Vipers are the lower end of Vortex. There is no comparison to the Ziess vs Viper. Bump up to the Razor and your getting very close in comparison

That's not correct, Vortex optics are produced in quality tiers and from bottom to top they are;

Crossfire
Diamondback
Viper
Razor

The Viper series are just below the Razor products in quality.

That being said, I buy Vortex scopes quite often but I can't find a pair of their binoculars that I think are worth the money. They simply don't fit my eyes and I always find some kind of edge or focus problem - and I sell them. For a mid range binocular I prefer Leupold or Sig Sauer.

Any Maven C1 fans? They are getting a lot of love. I'm looking at buying a Meostar or the C1s in the mid tier.
