Arctic Grizzly

I thought I'd add a photo of an Arctic Grizzly, since bear season is fast approaching! This guy is a big bear for that area! North slope area a couple years ago.

Thanks, this was during the spring and he was walking the perimeter of tundra ponds, eating goose eggs. I'm sure he was out looking for a girlfriend too. Really cool animals. I have taken a couple of them but none this good.

I hope to take one off of Kodiak Island next spring. This guy would be on the small size over there however!

That looks a lot like one I saw on a caribou hunt about 20years ago. We didn't have bear tags. It is still the only Griz I have ever seen in the wild. He was very impressive, BUT I did not get much sleep that night.....

My brother-in-law took a nice one (not nearly as nice as the one pictured) on our first sheep/caribou hunt up on the North Slope. It was a great bonus, because we struck out on everything else. I made a rug out of it for him, it turned out sweet! We have seen a few on my return trips, but always something stopping me from having the opportunity ( no NR tags, inside the 5 mile corridor etc.) Hopefully if my goat hunt is successful I can really concentrate on a grizz or browny. I think these big bears are so impressive and would like to match wits with at least one!

Nice! How close were you when you got the pic? If he's on the small size for Kodiak Island then I'll be just fine staying away from there! What a powerful and beautiful animal, thanks for sharing and good luck on your hunt.

Thanks, I worked security for the north slope at the time and we were required to stay within sight of bears if we saw one. I was in my truck at the time. He approached to about 30-40 yards. This photo is a still from a video I took.

I saw several Polar bears up there too but never got a respectable photo of one. I saw far more of them when I flew wildlife surveys along the north coast. Polar bears make me nervous, pure carnivores!!

That's so cool, I've never seen a polar bear in the wild. That's something I'll probably never get to hunt, but will keep dreaming. Did you work at the pump stations on the haul road?

A couple of years ago when I was on a guided elk hunt in Thorofare in the Teton Wilderness next to Yellowstone NP, saw some grizzlies there. 2 sows and 2 one year old cubs came within 50 yards of my guide and me. They were absolutely beautiful....for a bear! My guide was pretty nervous about them coming so close. luckily the wind was blowing from them to us and they had no idea we were anywhere near them. Sure wouldn't want one of them pissed off at me! they make our black bears look like pussycats.

I tried to get some pictures of them, but it was still a little dark and the one I took didn't really show much. My guide kinds freaked out when the flash went off, so I didn't try to take any more.

That's cool, I've been in that country 3-4 times now, pretty hard to beat the times I was there. I bet the winters are quite a challenge though. I'm looking forward to a chance to see more pics and hear more stories. I know one thing after 10 days packed in on the slope with only freeze dried, Buying a shower and a eating a burger and fries is a heck of a treat!(Coldfoot)

Neat pic! I saw 1 in Yellowstone once and 1 in northern ID that Im not sure if was a black or grizz. It was a smaller bear and Im not sure who was more surprised at out encounter, me or the bear. lol

They are a beautiful animal and if things go right hopefully we can actually apply for a very limited quota in Montana. I'm sure the extremists will try and prevent that though!

Thats a big bear, very amazing picture. Not a face I would want to meet outside of my cabin or tent though
