Applying for Preference points

Ok, so I am a little confused. I am looking at building a few preference points in Colorado and want to get my ducks in a row before the upcoming draw deadline.

I understand if I applied for preference points as a 1st choice and then filled in 2nd and 3rd choice hunts that I would need to submit the full license fee....but what about just applying for preference points?

Thanks

If your asking if you still have to front the tag fee's if you apply for points only... the answer is yes. You'll also get charged the new preference point fee too if you didn't have a license in 2013.

Even if you apply for points only, you still have to submit the tag fee. For elk, they only charge you for the cow tag. Also, if you buy a previous years fishing or small game license for $56, points are free. Otherwise they're $40 each. If you build points for multiple species, it is cheaper if you buy the previous years license.

You can't buy the previous years license anymore...

I've been confused since reading this Pref Point junk.....So help me out here;

When I first read it in the regs I thought I was getting charged this almost as a penalty for not applying last year.

I assume that, by purchasing last years fishing license (or hunting CO last year) I am getting exempted from this years Point cost "if I were to get a point"

If I don't select e-p-999-9 1st choice (Point only), and I draw my first choice hunt (near 100%), I shouldn't get hit with this fee. Right?

Like was said earlier (or perhaps in another thread) wouldn't it be simpler just to charge for the point like Wyoming?

If you had a fishing (or hunting, just the fishing is the cheapest) license last year you wont have to pay for a point. If you are applying for and getting a point for more then 1 animal its cheaper to get the fishing license. If you are applying and getting a point for only 1 its cheaper to just pay for the point. If you draw you will not have to pay for a point for that species since you are not eligible to get a point for that species on a year that you draw.

It's a preference point fee, so if you draw your 1st choice license you aren't getting a preference point therefore your exempt from this.
Thanks, seems pretty obvious but I can't find it in the book, and based on the info I got on the phone I don't know what to think.

I think the person I spoke to today was hired off the street yesterday.
They actually told me that there were no more either sex hunts for elk statewide
(Last I checked E-E-XXX-01-R was either sex)
I knew more about deciphering the codes than she did.

Yeah, they get volunteers in there this time of year and although they try to be helpful, sometimes they aren't very knowledgeable...

Just noticed your signature say's "Life Member RMEF". Good for you! I'll be a life member at some point. Been a regular member for almost 20 years now.

Man was I surprised when I looked yesterday! I knew they were working on a new website since the merger with state parks. My neighbor is a state parks manager and he said there were lots of changes taking place as they finally got their new head honcho hired and on the job. A little hard to navigate as I was so used to the other site and features.

The site is hard to navigate . . . Anyone find the "DAU herd management plans" on the new site? Can't seem to find them. The site definitely has more of a parks-oriented front page to it . . .

The new head guy is from out of state and I "ll bet he/they didn't really think thru the impact and timing of the new site.

Another interesting thing is that there is are regional citizen groups being put together to work with the department and commission on changes/problems with the current policies and rules within the department. My neighbor encouraged me to apply (which I did months ago)and it is still on hold. I'm not taking bets that it ever happens!
