Hey everyone, I'm relatively new to mule deer hunting and I’ll be heading out to Wyoming this fall for my first big hunt. I’ve done some reading and watched videos, but I still feel like I could use some advice from more experienced hunters.
I’m planning on hunting in the high country, and I know that mule deer can be pretty elusive in these areas. I’ve read a lot about glassing, but I'm curious about a few things:
I’m planning on hunting in the high country, and I know that mule deer can be pretty elusive in these areas. I’ve read a lot about glassing, but I'm curious about a few things:
- Best times of day: When should I be focusing on glassing? Early morning or late afternoon? Or should I try the mid-day as well?
- Buck vs. Doe behavior: How do I tell the difference when I’m looking through the glass? Should I be concentrating on areas where the bucks are more likely to be this time of year (e.g., higher ridges, deeper canyons)?
- Sign to look for: What signs should I be keying in on to find where bigger bucks might be bedding or feeding?
- Gear recommendations: I’m looking for suggestions on optics (binoculars and scopes) and backpacks. Anything you’ve used that you think is indispensable in the field for mule deer?
