Im looking to see if any one on this forum hunted the white river late season. I have a very indirect interest on this unit. Sone family members have land there and dont hunt any more....so im looking to see what kinda hunt this is. Is it more blacktails than mulies? Are there straight mulies in the area? Thanks

I had the tag in 2009. I burned 16 points on it after I saw the bucks coming off that hunt. At that time it was the best deer hunt in the state, in my opinion. Mostly blacktails that winter on the east side.

The hunt is a good hunt, Just make sure you know they are typically Blacky/Muley cross. There are some awesome heavy horned big bucks to be had, but they will definitely have the blacktail influence when it comes to size and score. Which in my opinion wouldn't matter, but some folks are disappointed with the fact that these bucks can't be scored as blacktail, but rarely reach large muley measurements. Some years are better than others, as early snow up high will help move does down to the east side of the unit, which concentrates the bucks in a smaller area. This year weather was pretty mild and some folks had a hard time finding what they were looking for. One friend I know that had the tag passed up a lot of bucks and eventually settled on a real nice buck, but came away feeling the hunt was over rated. In summary, as long as you know what is there and will be happy with that; it's a great hunt.

What area do the relatives live? There is a big difference from the west to east side, on the amount of Blacky traits you typically see.

I grew up in the unit and lived there for 45 years until a few months ago. It's a good hunt for Oregon, but not for other real deer states. A friends son had the tag last year and ended up with a 3 point. You're not going to get to pass up multiple 150" bucks holding out for 180. There are some good ones, but most guys will end up with an avergae 4 point. Less than average for a state like CO.
