Any advice appreciated

Hey everyone, i know its early but already planning 2013 and drawing for tags, like I am sure many are. i am a little torn on drawing a elk tag for my dad and i this next year. We both have 4 points Wyoming and 3 points for Utah. We really want to make this a kind of finale hunt because my pops is getting up there and we have always hunted deer, antelope, etc...but not Elk. We prefer muzzleloader or rifle. Any ideas on a good unit with these many points for NR would be appreciated. We are DIY types but also might consider a trespass fee or CMWD fee. Anyways I would appreciate any help in some good areas, not personal spots.

Thanks in advance!

There's probably not much you could draw in Utah with 3 points, unless you just got really lucky. With 4 points in the special draw, it looks like you could draw about 3/4's of the units. With that many units to choose from, you'll need to decide what kind of trophy quality you're after, and what kind of terrain you want to hunt.

there are not alot of places in utah for that amount of points. there are a few though but you will work hard to see any elk and there is not great quality. one unit that comes to mind is the paunsagaunt you are probably close to drawing with a muzzy in 1 to 4 years and could get lucky with 3 points. it does have some 320 330 type bulls with a few getting into 350 360. you would have to work hard to get on any bull though and you would probably not see alot. how old is your dad?

UT is basically a lost cause with 3 points. Even with 10 points you don't have a lot of great choices.

WY is an entirely different matter. You can get a general tag with 3 points, essentially guaranteed. A few of the limited entry units can be had for 3 points, but most of these aren't any better than the general units. Decide what type of hunt you want, (terrain, access, etc) and go from there.

Thanks for all the great info so far, i was mistaken on points. I actually have 4 points in Utah. It sounds like that wont help much. I have been looking at the Eastman magazines charts to try and find a good limited entry unit that we might be able to get with 4 points with good access for public land and not much wilderness area. Anyways I appreciate the help guys!

I have friends that hunt the general season in WY and do very well year after year in areas with no wilderness, naturally I’m not at liberty to discuss where these areas are but they’re out there.

In south east Wyoming there is some general areas with easy public access. There is some wilderness but it won't get in your way. I hunt it when I don't draw a limited tag. It is not great but there are bulls pulled out of there every year. Area 9,10,110. Again. Known as a trophy unit but they are in there. Bad side is you will have lots of friends hunting with you because it is general. But you will be able to draw it.

I have just one comment. It might not be the last hunt for your dad. I thought last season was my last hunt. I guess i'm not as ready as I thought I was. I'm already planning my next hunt.

My point being. You might look at this next hunt a little different if it's not really your dads last hunt.
