Well, I've finally settled back into reality. We had an absolute blast. We left Thursday the 9th at 8:30pm with way too much stuff! 27 hours later, after stopping for groceries, we arrived at our campsite for the antelope hunt. We set up camp in the dark and settled in briefly before hitting the sack. We were up before daybreak in what turned out to a beautiful crisp morning. We loaded up and hit the 2 track headed to where I had assumed we would get into some antelope. Less than half a mile into our ride I spotted a lone doe feeding about 150 yards ahead. We stopped and watched to see what was with her beyond the rise. Sure enough 1 by 1 about 20 more doe came into view. And lastly, I seen the horns of what I thought to be a very nice buck cresting the hill. My brother tried to get into position and that's all it took....they were out of there! After about an hour of trying to catch back up with the buck we decided to move on. The rancher stopped us along the way and told us to head north to his pastures because there were "about 1,000 antelope out there right now". Why not.....so off we go!! I couldn't stop thinking about that buck as he crested the rise. He looked huge to me but we had chased him into another county I was sure.
About a mile after we left the rancher we found another group of bedded antelope with a buck amongst them. My friend Dwayne decided that he wanted to take this buck. He positioned himself while we glassed and ranged for him. Three consecutive ranges gave 343, 345, and 343. As I'm watching through the binos Dwayne squeezes the shot off from his 30-06, and I proceed to witness something I'll never forget. Dwayne lost the buck after the shot and asked if he'd hit it. My brother and I looked at each other and laughed as he had witnessed the same thing I did. A perfect heart shot and a 30 yard death run. I won't get graphic, but what we seen through binos is what you would expect to see from a bow shot whitetail.
First antelope down!!
And off we go to this mythical pasture full of antelope. We came across many antelope along the way and had passed on maybe 10 bucks when Spencer (brother) located a lone buck down in a creek drainage. After looking him over for a few minutes he decided to try and get a shot. We got as close as we could and ranged him at 260 yards. Spencer got a solid rest and squeezed off the 7mm mag.....this antelope face planted. Didn't take a step haha. Another site to see through binos!! While we were dressing him a real dandy came up behind us. He was very tall and had nice prongs, but average mass. I flip flopped and had just about decided to take him, when he decided he'd had enough and took off. I continued glassing while Spencer was attending to his harvest and counted at least 100 antelope with 1 really nice buck. But I had to see more.
Antelope #2 down!!
