As I pack for my co antelope hunt this weekend I am looking forward to next yrs WY trip. My buddy and I have 4.5 points for deer and 6.5 for antelope, between us, NR. We hadn't planned on building so many points but we got beat out by point creep in 47 for a CPL yrs in a row and then drew some decent co tags so we did WY points for a CPL years. We want to hunt antelope then deer in the same area, any suggestions? Is 47 worth the antelope points or shall we shoot higher? TIA

It depends on what you will be happy shooting. I would plan 2 different hunts. You may be throwing away a bunch of points on one tag or the other

I'm doing a antelope muley combo this year. Its super hard to maximize your points in the same unit. Also, there is the chance of just drawing one. It was tough this year to predict where most hunters would be applying with the harsh winter.

Were gonna set up our main camp in the dear unit then drive to the lope are 1 hour away. I have also learned that a combo takes much more preparation then anticipated. Meat care alone took a while to figure out since you may need to store meat for a while.

With your point total I think you can make it work. Gonna be alot of research.

I'm super pumped about being able to choose what species to hunt every day. Our seasons overlap by 7 days.

I'm not familiar with 47

Some great antelope areas all over the state this year. I would look at deer numbers after the winter counts then decide on some areas.

I am doing a combo this year for fun- buck deer and doe antelope. A combo isn't ideal if a trophy of either species is a priority since you will have to split time. I would recommend picking your deer area and then applying for some doe antelope tags wherever you draw for deer. Then come back the following year in a great area for antelope.

I wouldn't burn all those points for a 1 week combo. If you have 2 weeks or more, I think it's definitely doable. In that scenario I wouldn't worry about how far apart your hunt areas are, just pack up and move after you fill your first tag.

+1. This is what we did a couple years ago.

Headed that way the 12th for two full weeks on a combo antelope mule deer hunt. Have four tags to fill if I can manage. I am not trophy hunting and just plan to enjoy my first ever Wyoming hunt.

47 is a solid unit, and younger mule deer can be found there, too. However, I don't think regions D and J are worth 4.5 points. Antelope 52 is good, too, IF you're not too picky on size, and deer area 80 MIGHT be worth your 4.5 points. I wouldn't get too hung up on hunting the same unit. In any unit requiring 6.5 antelope points, you can easily bag a couple of solid bucks in 2 days, then drive to your deer unit and hunt it for the remainder of your trip.

Thanks for the responses guys. My buddy and are both retired so time is not a problem, 2 weeks is fine and even longer if necessary. We are not trophy hunters so decent bucks of either would be fine and we wouldn't mind burning more points than necessary for the hunt. Just want to have fun and we weren't planning on building up this many points anyway, it just worked out that way.
