Hello All,

I'm starting my planning for a 2018 trip for my dad and I. We both have 7 antelope points and 3 deer points going into the 2018 draw. After doing my research I feel like antelope unit 68 would be a good fit for us. My dad will be 71 next year and I think we'd be chasing one of the top units longer than what we want to wait for. From what I've read 68 should hold good numbers and some trophy antelope. This being only our second time antelope hunting shooting an 80" buck won't be a necessity, but having the possibility at a good buck in a unit with good public is what we are looking for. 68 seems to fit those two requirements. We thought we would apply for a region E deer tag as well, and make it a combo trip. I haven't read anything outstanding about the general E units, sounds like there are pockets of mule deer. A trophy mule is not a necessity. I would just like to have the opportunity to hunt mule deer for the first time. Filling all four of our tags would be awesome. Any mule deer with forked G-2's (3 x 3) would make happy. Our deer hunting would take place in units 96 and 97. I'm thinking about staying at the JC/Green Mountain motel in Jeffrey City. The main supplies we would need is gas. Can anyone tell me what options there are for gas in this area? Jeffrey City? Muddy Gap? Does anyone have any insight on the JC motel? We can always camp on BLM land, but though staying in a motel might make things a little easier.

There appears to be plenty of good access and areas for antelope in 68. Any thoughts on the unit would be appreciated. As far as deer goes we have a lot to learn about type of terrain to look for to find them. Id like to stay away from going up into the green mountains. I don't think my dad could handle the hiking. So my thought is to start at the base of the NE/E base of the green mountains in the sage brush. Unit 97 appears to have some higher /rougher country that intersect me as well. Any thoughts on this idea. Any suggestions would be great for some newbie mule deer hunters would be great.

We will be bringing an ATV with to be able to run the roads and two tracks in case we get rain and the roads are too slick to drive the truck on.

It would be nice to fit a little fishing in too. Is there any trout fishing in the area.

One last question. Where would the closest meat locker , or place to find dry ice?

So how does this plan sound ?

Thank you.

I didn't think there was a motel in Jeffrey City. The cottonwood campground is nice on Green Mountain. There is dry ice in Lander. Gas in Lander and Muddy Gap.

I used Wind River taxidermy in Lander, WY for my 2015 antelope. I was happy and would use them again.

It's been a few years but I deer hunted 96 and 97 in 2013 stayed in camp ground on green mountain but hunted mostly on crook mountain over by Jeffery city and out around the rock piles north of the highway! Only spent 2 days on green mountain but ran into 2 great 160" plus bucks up high in the timber and just couldn't get on them fast enough before they dissapeared! crook mountain had a lot of yearling bucks and a ton of does only saw 2 legal shooters over there and we killed one of them which was a solid 4x5, we also ran into a herd of about 30 antelope with one good buck in it way up on top. We were suprised to see them up there honestly. When we moved across the highway north of green mountain and started hunting the rock piles that area was loaded with antelope saw a whole bunch of really really good bucks out on the sage around the river and rock piles and also a few good bucks and a lot of young non legal bucks and does! We did find 2 really good Muleys out there also bedded together along the river but they got bumped by other hunters before we could get after them one headed straight for the private land and the other we caught up with the following day but got cut off by what we think was an outfitted with a client who obviously new the ground better he slipped right around us while we were moving on the buck and I watched him die in the binos from about 600 yrds! Both these deer were probably in the 160 range! All in all we had a great trip and all four had opportunities at great bucks but hunting pressure was ridiculous and deer were spooky due to that but that area north of the highway around them rock piles was crawling with great goats!

killshot824,

That is some great info. I appreciate it. Those rock piles north of the highway are what caught my eye for possible muley spots. Since we'll have tags for both antelope and deer they sound like great places to look for both. Crooks mountain was another spot I'd looked at too. This reaffirms my e scouting. In all honesty any legal buck that gives a shot will probably be fine for me. I've never even hunted mule deer before. So the trigger finger will probably get a little itchy. Lol. Thanks again.

Was just in Jeffrey City this past weekend hunting antelope in unit 106. Didn't stay in the hotel but they do have gas now in Jeffrey City for what that is worth. Better than having to drive to Muddy Gap.

Also, i drove the edge of 68 on the way to my unit. I saw numerous nice bucks along the edge of the road in 68 including one big one hit by a car. Youve made a good choice.
