Sounded to me like he drew his gun and shot himself in the leg. Which likely caught the bear pretty off guard.

Either way, ouch. I bet that's going to be hurting for a while.

I figured that perhaps that the grizzly was chewing on his leg and that he tried to shoot it in the head.

I did first aid on a guy in alaska, that shot the sow off of his ankle with a 454 casul. the reticle caps on the scope of the pistol had teeth marks on them.
My guide on my grizzly hunt in British Colombia told me that he planned on shoving his 44 magnum into the bears mouth and pulling the trigger 6 times if he was ever attacked by a grizzly. One of the wranglers had fought off a couple of grizzly's by laying on his back and kicking his feet into the bears head.

A close friend got shot on a deployment to Iraq right in his ankle by a member of the Taliban.

He described the pain as if his ankle was in a large bench vise and you tightened it up as tight as you could stand it, then somebody came along and tightened it up about 5 more turns....

I can't imagine that kind of pain, I have broken bones and that is bad enough. Shattering multiples would be insane from sudden impact would be insane. A former WyHP that I knew growing up who was shot six times described it as letting Ken Griffey hit you with a baseball bat and then slamming a hot iron into it.
