Too bad they had to put him down. I figured they may move him to captivity for his final months in order to learn more via research, if possible... kinda sad in a way, but as goes nature.

Several years ago a local farmer was chopping corn and killed a 660 lb (dressed) bear with his chopper. The bear was sleeping in the corn field and he drove into it. The DNR figures that the bear was deaf and that it was over 25 years old.

Cool story about surviving the harsh realities of nature and the wild. I knew bears had a strong bite, still surprised to read that he was able to kill animals without major puncture wounds. Just crushing them to death or gumming them as the article called it.

A single blow from a grizzly can break a calf's neck. Then after that is when he would "gum" them to break open the hide and get to the meat.
