Deer season, public land, Sandhills of Nebraska. I?m walking in an hour and half before sunrise, headlamp turned off so my eyes can adjust to the darkness.

Notice something scurrying in front of me, and think I see black and white stripe (Uh oh!). So I make some noise, and turn on the red-light on my headlamp. No big deal, as I see him scurry off. I keep walking and making a little noise to let him know direction i?m going.

About 50 yards further in I notice something much bigger in front of me, and see white again...this time I kick a doe out of her bedding spot. Nice.

She walks over the hill and I again notice something scurrying through the grass...I turn on my red light and see a skunk...he?s 20 yards away and he?s pissed!

He turns and puts his tail straight in the air and is running right TOWARDS me! I turned and ran as fast as I could the opposite direction. Thankfully Pepe Le Pew lost interest!

There's no better cover scent!

I also learned that shooting them at close range is a bad idea when you're downwind of the skunk.

I have a story about skunks. I live in a pretty rural area and from time to time we have skunk problems. I have had to deal with their leavings on my dogs several times. One year we really had a problem and my neighbor borrowed my live trap to see if he could deal with some of them. I told him to bring the skunks (in the trap ) to my pond and throw the trap in, taking care of the skunk. About a month or so later he brought the trap back and said he had caught 19 of the critters. I ask him what he did with them. He said "I can't kill them, so I took them to town and released them in the park!" I almost cried I laughed so hard. The local news paper had just printed a story about the outbreak of skunks in town! You just never know.................

been sprayed twice, no fun. I to have had to trap skunks from under the front porch. live trap with cardboard on it, that way they can't see you. 20 foot piece of rope attatched and peanut butter as your bait. I do prefer a .22 over drowning and yes they will release when killed, won't spray but release. I have killed half a dozen this way.

When I was a kid my dad shot one and it crawled in the culvert under the driveway. Stunk to holy hell. Ended up using a bowfishing rig to arrow it and drag it out.

I'm headed to the sandhills tonight to hunt this weekend. I'll try to avoid him if possible as that would be a quick way to ruin a hunt.

So, we live on an acreage here in Iowa; out the country outside of town a little ways...

...I just stepped out to take the trash out, and, there it was: THAT SMELL [emoji44]

Like the 'Skynrd song, "ohh that smell..!"
