Im looking for a good alarm that I can take backcountry that isn't a wrist watch. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper and the wristwatch alarms don't last long enough to rouse me. I also need something that is going to work well in cold temps as I've had problems with that before.

I use a different system. I'm already on my hunting schedule. Once your body gets used to getting up at a certain time you just wake up at that time. It takes about three weeks for your body to adjust. If you need an alarm clock to wake up. You'll be tired.

Ditto what OH said. I find it best to be on the early-to-bed-early-to-rise schedule anyway. But I would recommend getting some kind of a wind-up alarm clock if you can. Anything battery operated may or may not work, and should not be counted on.

How about your cell phone if you have one ? I have been using mine for that reason the last fear years. I used to try the alarm on watches also. Never would hear it. I agree with others about your body adjusting.

I have never had a cell phone battery last very long when sleeping out in colder weather. Cell phones make great alarm clocks generally, but I've found that I want to conserve as much battery time as possible when out and about.

I haven't had a problem with my Iphone yet doing that in the cold (to about 28 degrees) but i keep it close to my body.
If I don't use it a lot the battery goes about 3 days. I'm pretty sure it has a lithium Ion battery though. I have a little fold up alarm clock I've had for almost 30 yrs. I also use. It works off hearing aid type batteries. Weighs nothing. Loud enough to wake me too. I know you aren't going to beleive this but I have the same batteries in it for 20 yrs. I always take them out and reverse them when not using.

You have to watch the cell phones not only in cold weather but also when you're out of service - that searching for coverage really drains the battery as well.
I've used a travel alarm clock from LL Bean, but, like you, after about 3 days you could beat me over the head with a 2x4 and I won't wake up. It is better than a wrist watch though.

I've had one from walmart I think it was... for years... it runs on 1 AA battery... very simple, set time/ alarm time, has a snooze/light, it's about as simple as it gets, I leave it in my toiletry bag... take the battery out when not in use... it was cheap too, maybe $9 ?
cell phones work pretty good these days.... but ya these clocks are much nicer than trying to set a wrist watch...

That will definitely do the trick.Drink a large bottle of water just before going to bed, you'll wake up, one way or another

Ditto Jay. I was going to say, hopefully bugling bulls close to camp will keep you awake all night. This happened to me once. I was wore out by noon chasing after them all morning.

The best alarm I have found so far is my new GPS. I have a Oregon 450. You set the alarm and then turn it off. At the selected time it will turn itself on and the alarm will go off.
Prior to the new GPS I was using a Sharp brand alarm clock that folds up to about the size of a small cell phone and about half the thickness. It would give time, date, and temp, and the battery has yet to be replaced. It was also lot cheaper than the GPS.
