What temperature range are you looking at. As the temperature range goes lower along with the weight of the bag the price goes up.

I bought a nice one at Walmart years ago that is good for 0 degrees for not much money. Other than that check out REI.

What's a fortune to you? If you sign up for a rei email list they send you 15% off. I used that to purchase a rei igneo rated to 19 degrees and weights less then two pounds.

And if your an REI member they also will send you 20% off coupons like 4 times a year both to the regular store and the outlet store as well. Plus the dividend they pay out in the spring for purchasing from their store are pretty nice

Weight and rating will drive you costs more than anything. What seasons do you plan to use it in? Packing in or truck camping?

I'm looking at 15F bags for backpacking in Colorado in Sept. It's for my son. I usually use a military bag for myself but it's a little heavy. I've been looking at Marmot and KUIU, but they are $600. The REI bag mentioned earlier may work for $300.

I guess what we need to find out from you is what do you consider light weight?

I did a quick search and found a number of bags around 4lbs that are good down to 20 degrees and less. Also what type of bag are you looking for, mummy, rectangular, or a different style? Is you boy extra large in height and weight or will a standard bag work? Also as was mentioned are you truck camping or going to be packing into a area?

I would get on promotive.com and see if you can join. There are a few good companies there that give healthy discounts. Also, massdrop will have good stuff every once in a while.

Check out campmor.com--I got one of their branded bags (don't have a clue who made it) rated for 0' a number of years ago for I think around $150; used it a couple times on backpack hunts and it worked OK.

Nimo makes a bag that is a little wider down where the knees are that makes things so much more comfortable than a straight mummy bag and price isn't too bad. If you are former military or fire/police or outdoor industry employee get on Promotive.

I picked up a Marmot Sawtooth 15 degree bag at REI, sub 3lbs, for $250 after my discount, and that included shipping it to my house. Marmot also makes that version in wide and long, in case you're looking for that.

These are pretty good bags, I've used the 20 degree down to high 20s and have been fine.

This + a big Agnes insulated Q core is my current back country setup. Last year, 3rd week October into 4th it dumped a foot and a half of snow on me and my cousin hunting his elk tag at 10k feet....if you have room and budget get an insert like Sea to Summit and you're good to go well into the teens.

I'm a big guy (over 6' and about 250) and I hate mummy bags, I like to move around IN a bag and not have the bag stick to me. I went to Cabelas and looked at bags. They had 30 or 40 hanging up on hangers. I tried a bunch of rectangular bags by putting them on the floor and actually getting in them. I look for large zippers, duck cloth outside and flannel lining. I bought 2 bags....same mfgr & model. One rated to 20 degrees and one rated to -20. Both bags together cost me less than $450. That was 5 years ago and still using them, love them both as they are extra wide and extra long.

Neither one are back packing sleeping bags as I don't back pack anymore as I am too damn old.

Last November deer hunting here in Colorado, the temp at night got down to 5 degrees and I was warm as toast in the -20 bag.

I agree with you on the big warm comfy sleeping bag. I also have a over size one big enough for my 6'5" and 240lbs. I have been in temperatures well below 0 in this bag and it felt like I was at home in my king size bed.

I do however have a lighter one rated to 20 degrees that I can use if I pack into somewhere or if I need one that is nice and light. It is a modified mummy bag and I have no problem moving around in it and getting quite comfortable.
