Hi all me and my brothers are planing an elk/mule deer DIY backpack hunt in Montana. We're new to Montana and wondering if y'all had any advice on areas to look into or just point us into the right direction. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum Josh,

Montana is a big place. You'll get a better response if you ask more specific questions, especially as a newcomer to the forum.

Good luck this fall and shoot straight.

New to the area meaning moved there? or coming in the fall with non-resident tags? What part of Montana are you looking at or going to be staying? Just a few starter questions.

Sounds like another person who wants to know what tree to sit next to instead of doing a little research on their own before coming on a Forum to ask more specific questions than "where do I go?"!

been reading this forum for a while just never posted before but i was raised in MT now live in AK. hunted elk and mulies all over the state of montana and have been sucessful but as people are saying...where are you looking to hunt? missoula area? bozeman area? central MT...you need to have a starting point of some kind. some of the public land/national forest areas are pretty small and people wont come out and tell you to go there, others require permits you should have already gotten. are you a MT resident? if you really want to backpack hunt you could try the scapegoat/bob marshal either from the holland lake side or the augusta/choteau side but if you think you and your brother are going to pack a bull elk 20 miles you may want to rethink your strategy...you need to address some specifics. not trying to be a downer but i wouldnt post..." im going to colorado to hunt, tell me where to go" if you give me an area i might be able to help you a little...

No worries, NDHunter,

My post was for everybody. It seems the OP was just trolling for bites, and looking for a shortcut to success.

The OP posted the same thread in three different locations in three minutes.

As Pete stated on another post, this guy is typical of the younger generation that thinks everything is going to be handed to them on a silver platter with no effort on their part to get what they want! I have seen so many guys make a first post like this on different websites this year that I can't even count them! On the other hand, when I see a guy has made the effort and done a lot of research before making a post for help, I'll go out of my way to help him.

Yea... I realized that it was a different thread but also somehow thought the other one had been deleted but it obviously hadn't and, and, and... I'm just not very smart.

Well...obviously one was looking for MD tips for a DIY hunt, the other for elk. :D

I'd like to point out there's enough info on the net for most units to be able to bs your way into making someone believe you've put forth an effort scouting and researching the area.
