A Rare Opportunity

My father and I have been invited to go on an elk hunt with a guy in town we know. His family and him head over by Dubois every year for an elk hunt. This coming year he has offered us to go along. The invite comes as an honor to us since this year will be his 60th straight year hunting in that area. I want to go just to sit and hear the campfire stories he has to tell (although he tells me he may be asleep by that time)!!! I know the elk have struggled in this area from the bears and wolves. Wall tents and horses will be used. It is kind of a dream hunt for me. My father on the other hand is a ranch manager and will have his hands full with calves. Hard to get away from his job for even a few days. He also has a huge fear of grizzlies. I know that if he goes that will go away.

Any suggestions on what to do? Its a general area and I have a few spots to hunt near home if I don't fill my tag. How is the elk hunting between Dubois and the middle of the pass? The guy we would be going with says its getting better. But a guy with 60 years would probably know where every crevice is for elk to hide in. We would get to go with him a couple days, but the rest we would be on our own. He would give us great advice on where to go these days of course. I'm thinking the stories on this trip would be worth it alone!!! Just looking for advice on what to do.

If you've never hunted the wilderness on horseback, I'd say jump on this opportunity. If you have, I'd say apply for the hardest to draw bull tag in the state, and then, whether you draw or not, you're set.

Bird,

GO! The experience alone will be worth it but the outfitter I went on my sheep hunt with lives in Dubois and they still do fairly well with their elk hunts. There are still some quality bulls around as well but the bears and wolves have taken their toll. But again, the experience alone is worth the hunt and possibly harvesting a great bull is just icing on the cake. Good Luck and let us know how you do!!!

HAHAHA, you guys sound like my wife. I am 70% sure I am going. I just need to find a way to get my dad to go. He is my one and only hunting partner besides my wife. I have always wanted to hunt that area on horseback. The experience will be worth it alone. Another bonus if I go is my wife told me she would buy me a new .44 mag to keep me safe!!!! I will talk to the experienced veteran and start planning. There are lots of great trophy bulls where I live but I would take a spike or cow on a wilderness hunt and be just as happy.

I wouldnt even worry about getting a tag or filling one. Go along with that old guy and listen to his stories and learn from him and learn about the country and enjoy the experience! Getting less of those old guys all the time, enjoy it whole you can! I planned all last hunting season around a 2nd choice antelope hunt because of the old guy that owned the ranch and invited me to hunt there. He passed away not long after I hunted there last year. Just go! You will never look back and wish you hadnt gone.

There I fixed it for you! You are going and you would be crazy not to go. Get yourselves a large can of bear spray for both of you to have with you on you packs at all times and go have fun!! I'll tag along as a watchdog just to get the chance to go with you, pack game, you name it!! Enjoy the journey and go!!

Talked to my dad tonight and it sounds like he is in even if he only can go for a couple days. Can't wait to listen to all the old guys at the campfire. We aren't telling the old guy my dad is coming. It's gonna be a surprise since he really wants my dad to go.
