My father and I have been invited to go on an elk hunt with a guy in town we know. His family and him head over by Dubois every year for an elk hunt. This coming year he has offered us to go along. The invite comes as an honor to us since this year will be his 60th straight year hunting in that area. I want to go just to sit and hear the campfire stories he has to tell (although he tells me he may be asleep by that time)!!! I know the elk have struggled in this area from the bears and wolves. Wall tents and horses will be used. It is kind of a dream hunt for me. My father on the other hand is a ranch manager and will have his hands full with calves. Hard to get away from his job for even a few days. He also has a huge fear of grizzlies. I know that if he goes that will go away.
Any suggestions on what to do? Its a general area and I have a few spots to hunt near home if I don't fill my tag. How is the elk hunting between Dubois and the middle of the pass? The guy we would be going with says its getting better. But a guy with 60 years would probably know where every crevice is for elk to hide in. We would get to go with him a couple days, but the rest we would be on our own. He would give us great advice on where to go these days of course. I'm thinking the stories on this trip would be worth it alone!!! Just looking for advice on what to do.
