Who all's planning on taking advantage of the small moon and mild weather to hunt the deer opener this weekend? I can hardly remember the last time the opener wasn't on a 100-degree full moon.

I'll be glassing about 24 hours from now to locate something for Saturday morning. Not going to be too picky, as time for Blacktail hunting is very limited this year and all my scouting has gone toward other tags. Should be a fun time nonetheless!

Where does everyone else stand? Who's going, who has a good feeling?

Good luck out there.

Every year a number of folks chime in who have never heard about our season opening so early. Here's a quick read on California's Blacktail hunting:

We pre scouted a new area that turned up just a few bucks. We then scouted our go to spot and found a big ol' bear in our canyon and NO bucks.

Hoping this cooler weather has that bear off into another canyon and ours will be back to normal. I agree about the weather, think I may even bring the cover this year.

Good luck Josh. Looking forward to hearing your results.

I can remember as a young teenager deer hunting the southern California coast near Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Louis Obispo in August. I was usually really, really hot, lots of brush and not too many bucks. Just seems too early to hunt deer, especially now that I live in Colorado and hunt in the snow a lot!! Good luck to you all.

I've only hunted the opening weekend. Had some real close calls and drew on bucks more than once, but nothing offered a real good angle or clean open shot to take.

Since then I've been focusing all efforts on scouting for antelope which opens this coming weekend.

Todd, I was wondering what was up with you. Good luck on the speed goats. What area did you draw ? Lassen or likely tables?
No 032/34 in NV. Been up there 3 times to scout. Lots of driving but I waited a long time to draw so hoping to make the best of it. Blind is set as of Saturday, season opens this weekend.
