I put my Dad in for tags that are a bit easier terrain wise so that I have opportunity to spend time with him.

If you didn't read the Journal, they discussed the 90/10 rule. 10 percent kill 90 percent of the big bucks. Memories with family and friends are just as important as the score.

I've heard a saying all my life that to kill big bucks you have to hunt where big bucks live. I'm sure there's something to it out Wesr as well considering where a lot of cover page animals come from.

Yea I know the 90% - 10% thing. From where I sit I see many of the 10%er as doing it wrong but that is just me. To each their own hunt like you want but this self confessed 90%er has accumulated a fairly large pile of racks that will make even the most dedicated 10%er look twice.

Again I dont see hunting as a contest and I will never see the score or how many bucks you kill in a row as important. In fact I have not even gotten around to measure any buck I have killed (other than outside width) and not sure why folks do. You boys pry find it funny but I dont mount my "trophies" either - again only a 90%er would have the audacity not score or mount the deer he has killed. Including that deer taken with archery equipment in the profile pic he is just over 29" and I will pry never know the score.. I would bet a nickle that the biggest one will go well over 210" but then again I will let the 10%ers worry about score as that deer was taken with my father and grandfather who has passed - so if it were a 170" class 4x it would be just as cool to me..

So what I am sayin is that the 90%ers might only have this week to hunt and even if they dont get out of camp I am happy to share the woods as well as camp with them and will not belittle their experience in any way. As to me the pic with a family /sun set in the background is much more valuable than hanging a dead animal on the wall to brag about - but that is why I am a 90% as to me being a 90%er is has nothing to do with the amount or size of bucks you kill but the perspective you have on the hunt..

I am just sayin to us 90%ers hunting is more to us than just the score, the mount, and how many years in a row you killed a deer...

Good luck to all the 10%ers and 90%ers who are lucky enough to get out to enjoy the seasons.

I don't think the 10 percent rule has anything to do with making sure you score and mount all of your animals. To me it is about someone who has built up a skill set to take trophy mule deer often. That doesn't mean they don't hunt with their families, buddies or introduce others into the world of hunting. The only post that mentions scores was yours. Taking a trophy mule deer consistently is quite an accomplishment in my book and I admire the dedication and perseverance that a few have to do it consistently. It takes mental toughness, patience and a year long commitment. There are quite a few 10 percenters who do not seek public recognition or try to make the pages of the Journal. To each his own.

I get a different satisfaction from all of my hunting, whether that is hunting with my kids, wife, 72 year old father,my hunting buddies or solo.

You finally draw that 4000$ bighorn tag after 30years and you run out of gas trying to go that extra 10 miles to save 2cents a gallon at the cheaper gas station in your 60000$ pickup!

In God We Trust, i respectably disagree.

Everyone of us has run into the guy who's actually drunk while hunting or seen tracks from where someone has gone off road, the guy that bitched that there's no deer yet never left the truck. Yes, there is a wrong way to hunt!

Keep your self righteousness to yourself. Perhaps you're right about the intent of the article, but this thread turned into something else. There's nothing wrong with a little good natured fun

I must admit I looked at this thread a bit, but did not care for how it seemed to be going. I do appreciate your perspective and think I'd enjoy sharing a camp fire with you.

"The old timers at the café say its not like it was 30 years ago. Its all shot out and most of them are inbred."
A friend of ours says this on a regular basis. another classic of his is " we drove 500 miles that week deer hunting and never saw a legal buck"

I'm mostly 90%er but I do go 10% from time to time. I can tell you that I'm a lot more successful when I'm a 10%er.

I don't think that people are really bagging on how anyone hunts as opposed to bagging on people that act 10%er or talk like it only to do all the things we're mentioning.

People I know routinely call us "buck hunters" said in a demeaning way.

...and 1st to arrive at the water hole (in town) instead of glassing in the evening.
I just want a good iced tea & a steak, but will wait until dark to leave the hunting grounds. The water hole in town is a good place to scout as well if you want to know what group of guides are in the area.

Back when I subscribed to Eastmans, there seemed to always be some hunts featuring 10%ers. I know in the hunting world there is always some jealousy, wanting to be the one that gets the biggest baddest animal, wishing they had the time and money for some of these out of sate hunts. I actually feel another thing for some of these 10%ers, pity. How many times have you read an article and the guy says that he spent every weekend in the spring looking for the bucks sheds, then spent some of his vacation locating the buck in early July and spent every possible weekend and day off following the bucks movement until hunting season start. He spends 2 weeks on the hunt and bags the animal. Then at the end of the article thanks his wife and children for all the love and support for his passion. I think to my self, "do you even enjoy spending time with your wife and kids?". Not every 10%er is like this. And just cause someone wears camo every day doesn't make them a 10%er, they could be a Nascar fan!!!!

I don't think truck decals have been covered. Down here it's popular to adorn the back glass of a truck (or small family car) with Oakley/Costa, browning, yeti, bone collector, TTHA, SaltLife, DU, Buck/Duck Commander, Louisiana Sportsman, etc decals to let the world know you mean business when it comes to hunting.
