I was on a job site just north of Cincinnati. At the time, I worked for a company called Earth Tech. We had contracts with FEMA, OSHA, FAA, and a bunch of other government agencies. We were their on-call people for all things environmental/hazmat related. Anyways, one of the excavator operators had a radio in his cab and just stopped running it an started listening to the radio intently. We all gathered around and started listening. By noon, the project manager's phone was ringing. They were calling us up to help. On the evening of I believe it was the 18th, I was waiting for a phone call to see where I was being sent. Ironically, we had a job starting up in Utica, New York. It was between me and my buddy Alex. One was going to ground zero and one to Utica. I got the call and I was sent to Utica, he was sent to ground zero. He was there for 11 months. One of his main tasks was certifying what was contained in the various canisters and pressurized bottles trapped in the wreckage before they were removed. Many of these were fireman air/escape tanks. He didn't come back the same. He saw things that I can't, nor want to, imagine. I would have been honored to help, but at the same time I'm glad that I was sent to Utica. Prayers to the families that lost loved ones that day, and prayers to those such as my friend who worked there. Prayers also to the men and women who continue to fight the blood-thirsty idiots that done this.
