I've been looking at different areas to hunt bears this year. I'm a spot and stalk guy and I was wondering if hunting bears in 8a and 10a using a boat to access remote areas of dworshak reservoir would be a worthwhile endeavor. Just a general idea of whether there will be bears at the elevations that would be accessible from the reservoir that time of year and if there is suitable terrain and vegetation to make spot and stalk hunting possible in the area would be a great help. Thanks in advance and feel free to PM if you don't want to share too much over a public forum

Never hunted bears in 10A, although just across the southeast unit in 12 by Kooskia. A lot of bears in there. Just difficult to spot and stalk because it is so thick. The snow usually dictates how far up and access, especially in May. First couple of weeks into June are probably best, although I like to hunt turkeys earlier in May when that season is open too. Don't get me wrong, some places offer good glassing, but unless there is a good trail or road for access, sometimes too hard to find after a stalk.

Might as well put out baits, don't need a lot and you can get 3 per hunter for a reasonable cost. Spot and stalk, check your baits, the bears will usually hit them within a day or two, trail cams to see when they're coming in. Use both methods, once a bait is hit, the bear(s) will be in the area and spot them coming and going from the bait. Start saving bacon grease, old pastries, etc., or buy some cheap bread and pour molasses over that, throw some big logs over the bait to keep the birds and unwanted from eating all the bait :) Good luck!
