Hunted 76 several years ago on the first rifle and is was a lot of fun. Ton of elk. We packed in 8 miles never saw another person or heard any other shooting than ours. Should draw again next year.

whats everyone think about hunting 61 or 76 for elk.......
I don't know much about unit 76... only that it's a good unit. I have however hunted and spent a lot of time in unit 61. What season/ weapon are you considering? Hope you have a pile of points if it's archery or muzzleloadng. Rifle takes several points too. My friend has enough points to draw a muzzleloader deer tag for unit 61 so we'll be hunting there in September. An uncle of mine should draw a muzzleloading bull tag, and a couple others should draw bear tags for the september season. If you decide to hunt 61 I might be able to help you out. PM me if you want.

Talked with Biologist in 76 he said if your looking for a good backcountry hunt come to 76 for elk. He said the trophy quality may not be quite what 61 is but that it is a great unit for elk. I was also told not to waste my deer points on 76 for archery by a couple of people. If you look at the archery success rate and harvest numbers it definitely has me scratching my head why this is a draw unit with a minimum of 4 pts for non resident. Guess they don't like seeing out of state tags over there. Lol.

I hope it is a good unit. I put in this year for first rifle with 5 points which gives me a 68% chance of drawing. If you have 6 points you can draw it for sure.

I'd go with GMU 76....whether you are a DYI or going with a outfitter...it is excellent.
It is a rugged Unit but holds many excellent trophy bulls.
A great outfitter is Aaron Laske Wilderness Adventures in Alamosa.

Yeah Like I posted earlier 5 points gives you a 68% chance of a first rifle tag and 6 points gives you a 100% chance of drawing it. You can look it up on the "On Your Own Adventures" website.
