If I had to do over again, I'd go with the 300 Win. mag. over the 7 mag. but I got a really good deal on my rifle, so I'll keep it for now. I'm going to put a muzzle brake on it this spring. So I can follow my shots better.

I started with the 300 WM and used it for 4-5 years. It was time to upgrade gun/scope quality so after a lot of research I went with the 7 mag and couldn't be happier.

I already had a 30-06 so I didn't look at the 300 Win mag when I bought a new rifle 40 years ago, I went with the 7mm Rem mag instead. That 7mm did everything that I asked of it from dropping elk to long shots on deer and antelope. I had a couple of friends that watched me drop antelope at 600 yards and they figured that they needed one also.
My next step up was a .340 Weatherby mag, now that is a long range rifle that packs a punch when it gets there.

Well I do reload as of about a year ago and that is what has me interested at all in getting another rifle to be honest. I'm hooked lol. I acquired all the equipment from my father in law after he passed and low and behold there's still 7mag and 300 wsm dies available for me to pick up not to mention probably a couple hundred once fired 7mag brass. Not sure if those are reasons enough to go with it. I want the gun primarily for an elk rifle but realistically would be the one I take for muleys also.

IMO a 300wsm > 270wsm
and if you never plan to shoot past 500 or 600 yards, then the 300wsm shooting 150/165gr premium bullets is probably better than the 7mm Rem.Magm IMO., short action with a 23-24" barrel is all you need.

compare a 270wsm shooting 150gr and a 300wsm shooting 150gr... also the 270 will need more barrel length to get'er done.
you can even shoot 130gr 300wsm if you really need more speed.

Oh thank's as I've had it in my head that I'm gonna go with my gut and get the 7mag! Haha that doesn't really help my decision making, no offense! Lol

I guess my thought has been that even for elk I probably wouldn't go above 180gr bullets in either caliber and the 7 mag tops out there so why go bigger than that. Thoughts? Is the bigger diameter of the 30 cal that big of a deal?

Getting them all sounds like the best plan!
and in reality all 3 are probably pretty close to splitting hairs, given the right loads/animals/ranges.
IMO
the 7mm should use 160gr type bullet, 175 is heavier, slower, worse BC in many cases.
the 300 can use 165-180

If you go with the 7mm rem. mag.
Go with something around a 160 gr. bullet for the best BC.

I have the same problem there aren’t very many calibers that I haven’t been able to convince myself that I “need “. Truth is whatever you decide is the right answer. With all the modern powders and bullets out there I don’t think you will disappointed with any of the calibers mentioned. So just buy one of each LOL.

I'm kinda waiting to see what all the manufacturers come out with after next week but I think I've pretty well convinced myself to get a 300 wsm. My other main rifle is a 270win and just starting to feel that the 7 mag isn't much different than it and i think the short mag gives a little more space between one another.

I'm too indecisive, that's the problem. Tomorrow or possibly sooner I'll be telling myself the 7 mag is what I should get.
My biggest concern is with the rifles I'm considering i want it to have a 24 in barrel and no longer. One offers the 7 with a 26 the other a 24. One offers a 300 win mag with a 24 but not the short mag and the other offers the short mag with a 24.
Just too many stinkin options. Not sure if that's good or bad.
