My brother and I drew these tags this year. We just took our first scouting trip and went up the Eddiesville Trail and came out on the Stewart Creek trail. With limited time we were only able to stay on the trails and of course we saw about 40 tree huggers hiking on the trails. We were only able to glass from the trails and we saw a couple average bucks, but nothing too special.

I'm assuming the hunting will be much better if you get off the main trails, but are there any areas you guys would suggest checking out? The amount of high country is limited so were basically forced to focus on the areas east and west of San Luis Peak. What areas would you guys suggest?

Sawtooth Mountain in the middle of the unit also looks pretty promising. Not quite as high as La Garita Wilderness, but Sawtooth is 12k feet so I'm assuming there are some good bucks up there. Does anyone have any experience hunting that area?

We probably won't be able to make it up there for another scouting trip, so we're stuck learning as much as we can before the season starts Aug. 26th. Thanks!

I'd suggest sticking to the quakies instead of worrying about finding the high country. They're going to be scattered, fat and hanging out where they can browse in the shade for the most part. It's Summer pattern so still check the cover well within a mile radius of McDonough Res and its tributaries.

I think the harder you make it the less chance for success. Like Packmule said or like I would do. I would stay within a mile or two of hwy 114 and hunt each drainage that goes to hwy 114. I have been in there at least five time and not found any deer in a lot of it and did find shooters in some of it every time. In plain site of hwy 149 and Willow Creek is where I found my second best buck of that unit.

Thanks for the good info guys. I'm kinda bummed hearing that because I've always wanted to hunt CO highcountry. Sounds like this might not be the best unit for that... We'll probably start out hunting the highcountry and if we don't find much we'll head down to the lower country.
