This is my first post. I've never stepped foot in Wyoming before but started gathering bonus points and now have 6. I just retired and I'm 65yrs old. I finally have the time to make a trip for an antelope hunt. I live in Az and can't seem to draw a tag for the life of me. My question is "do I have enough pts to draw a decent unit in Wyoming with lots of public land and goats? What would you do with 6 pts?" I haven't a clue where to start. I did read the DIY article on the web.

Thanks in advance,

TJ

I just joined here on Eastman and should have read some of the posts that have already been posted. Sorry for repeating a question that has probably been asked a hundred times.

YJ; Welcome to the forum. I was in exactly your position last year. Retired, 6 points, new to antelope hunting. I was just accumulating points while doing other hunts, and got to the "point" where it was time to go. With 6, you can get a tag in the majority of units, and I suggest that you find an area that took 4 or 5 NR points last year, and start your research. Read the posts from the last year or so, read the MRS for WY antelope, and you have a good start. In WY, you can share your points with a bud, average 3, and still find a unit with a lot of lopers. Good Luck.

Get you a map of Wyoming antelope areas and indicate the areas that take the amount of points you want to spend, or as the above poster mentions, go with those that take at least 1 less point to account for point creep. You should have a decent group in the central to western part of the state. Then do "enny meeny miny moe", throw a dart at the map, or some other random selection and you will be in good shape . . .

You'll love antelope hunting. Or at least I consitently have. I have hunted 90, 91, 92. 94, and 96. Based on your points, you should have a good chance at these tags with the special license. But as the previous post have stated\, there are many areas in wyoming that have great goats with less points and a regular licsens. You'll have a great time.

Thanks RICMIC, HiMtnHnter, and Rooster 410 for all the great information. I have been looking at the Wyoming Game & Fish Department information on drawing odds, all morning, and it's starting to make some sense to me.

If you are new to antelope hunting I highly recommend picking up Mike Eastman's book on antelope hunting. It really helped my group out on our first DIY hunt for them, especially on judging them.

I know Tj who is asking the question here from a site here in AZ. He is a seasoned hunter. I think all He is asking is places to hunt not how to hunt . Hope this helps with His questions. Good luck TJ...............BOB!

Thanks for clearing that up Bob. Good to see someone from coueswhitetail.com on here. Feels like family. Yea, I've never stepped foot in Wyoming ever and was not sure how I should go about asking for info. You know how the newbies get hammered for asking for places to hunt on their first post in cwt.
Starting putting in with a friend back 6yrs ago and never got drawn several yrs and then he got drawn and I couldn't go so I have been on top of the bonus points ever since. I have access to hunterstrailhead and have been looking at DIY Antelope Hunting so I'm getting some what a feel for figuring out the odds but it still doesn't prepare you when it comes to never being there before.
Good to hear from you.

I would spend those points, no use hoarding.....
Like they said above. Get an antelope map.
Highlight the areas that took 5pts in reg draw one
color. Highlight the ones that took 5 pts in special
draw another. Pick your poison. You can have a
Good hunt in any of them.
Spend those points....

Lots of units will have great hunting this fall if we do not get a June heavy wet snow that kills fawns. Conditions are great in most of the state right now with antelope numbers rebounding nicely from past drought years. Horn growth looks good and the range is in good shape. With your points do some homework and talk with G&F in the areas you are looking at. Pick a unit with a decent length season and avoid opening week. Central and SE or Eastern Wyoming have had a mild winter with good moisture so far.
