Thinking about getting a new rifle, debating between the 6.5 Creedmore and the 7mm 08. Also debating between Savage or Ruger, the Savage's has more models to choose from with a 22" barrell on the Creedmore, where as the Ruger has a 24" barrell in the Hawkeye. If I choose the 7mm 08 I am thinking a Savage or Weatherby Vanguard S2. What does everyone think?

I doubt that you can really go wrong.
I have had a 7mm-08 and really like the caliber. Either Savage or Ruger are fine choices but I personally would lean towards the Savage, only because I hear really good reports about their accuracy and I've never owned one.

THe short case of the 7mm-08 can't realyl make use of the heavier 7mm bullets available without losing a lot of velocity compared to something like the 7x57 or .280.

I don't think you can go wrong either.
The good BC 120gr bullet bumping 3k is hard to argue with, and as a 264 fanatic I love the penetration of the 6.5mm's. I'd have to vote that way. I am thinking of getting one myself. In the real world though I can't think of a shot I'd take with a 6.5 Creedmoor that I wouldn't take with a 7mm-08 or the other way around. Either fills the same niche, and either will benefit from the longer barrel. I'd consider either a deer rifle and both are plenty capable there. I personally want a little more gun for elk, even if it is only a 270 or 264, just to get a 140gr bullet up closer to 3k fps. Not that those won't work with a good bullet, it's just my opinion from my experience.

7mm-08 gets my vote 25-06 and 270 are what i own. They have worked very well for me and the wife.

I have a Savage 7mm-08 and it might just be my new back pack rifle. I got the youth model for my daughter. I sighted it in and am kinda hooked on it.

Been shooting a 7mm-08 Remington for many years now, love that rifle. Took down a bull at 400 yards in 2008 in Idaho. Dropped the bull in his tracks.

I'm debating the same thing, almost. Trying to decide on either a 7mm/08, a 6.5 creedmoor or a .260 Remington. The 6.5 & the .260 are an either-or thing ballistics wise,but the 7mm has a wider choice of bullets for reloading. As for the rifle, I've been looking at a Browning X bolt at 6 & 1/2 lbs. Or a Savage #19207 Light Weight Hunter. I'm pretty sure that the Savage will be coming home with me. From the research that I've done, the Savage LWH gets rave reviews for accuracy due to that excellent trigger. And coming in at 5 1/2 lbs. doesn't hurt either. Every ounce counts, you carry them more than you shoot them! I have a Winchester Stainless Classic in 30.06 now....but it seems to get heavier every year that I get closer to hitting 70. I've killed alot of critters with the mighty little 7-08. I have a kimber for my mountain rifle & she shoots lights out. I also have a remington that shoots lights out. I reload for both of them and it is a easy round to fine tune to a rifle. My vote 7-08 all the way !

I have the savage lightweight hunter and I love it. For a smaller caliber it does kick pretty good since it is so light. It is super accurate once I got a load established with the long range accubond 150 gr. Topped it with a Nikon monarch 4-16 and talley lightweight ring base combo weighs about 7# with a full magazine.

As mentioned in another post I am a 280 guy through and through. However, I just purchased a Winchester M70, Featherweight in 7mm-08 for my son. So far I am very impressed with the rifle, very accurate and not much of a difference in velocity from my 280 handloads. As for which rifle to choose, its hard to beat a savage for accuracy. A very good friend of mine has the Savage Maxx 1 varmint rifle in 6.5 Creedmore, it shoots one hole 5 shot groups at 100 yards and 5/8" groups at 200 yards with 140 accubond's.

If you have a 280, then you've already trumped the 7mm08. The 270 has more to offer than the 7mm08. You know you should try the 6.5 creedmoor and enjoy the lighter bullets it has to offer. I have had a Savage in one configuation or the other since I was in grade school(some 50 years ago ) and still own and hunt with one today. I change barrles on them now if I want something new and have always found the savage bolt action to be accurate and reliable. The veriaty Savage offers is unlimiting and one can find the stock, barrel, and caliber combination to fit the picture of the rifle you have in mind.

I was having this debate with myself last year. Went with the 7-08. Here was my logic. Ballistically, they are pretty close out of about 400 yards, after which the 6.5 starts to shine. I doubt I'd ever attempt a shot beyond that range. The 7mm is about 15% bigger around in terms of area than a 6.5. Someone mentioned barrel length earlier. Given a 15% difference, a 24 inch 6.5 barrel has about the same volume to a 21 inch 7mm. So, if you don't need the smaller bore ballistacally, then take the bigger volume to allow for fuller combustion. I really didn't factor in penetration.
This may be an example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing; I'm not sure I'm making sense here, but it was part of my thought process when making the same decision about 7 vs 6.5. I'm happy with my 7-08. Hopefully, someone who knows more than I will correct anything wrong here.

There's no wrong answer to this one IMO. That said, I have 7mm08s with 22" tubes that have taken 4 elk, 3 muleys, and 2 antelope out to 435 yards without complications. I don't think the results would've changed with any of the other options listed above so my thoughts are go with what you like the best and get comfy with it.
