40 cal shotshell

I was wondering if anybody has any experience with using birdshot in a pistol. This year we had a bunch of ruffed grouse
within 5 feet of us while draging my deer down the mountain. You guys think this would kill one of these grouse?

If they were that close....yes, definitely. I've shot gophers with .357 shot shells out to 20' with no problem.
