While the .338 ultra mag is a little faster we have had the .340 Weatherby for quite a while that does the same thing. Then if you really want to look at a real super magnum take a look at the .338-378 Weatherby mag
I can shoot my .340 Weatherby about 10 times before I need to put the muzzle brake on it and I can shoot my 7mm Rem mag just about all day without a muzzle brake.
Close to double that of a 7mm Rem mag.

Never been a big fan of the UM's. My son has a .300 RUM which we handload for. Spent a lot of time working on loads. For 12 more grains of powder, he gets 90+ fps faster that my .300 Wby. I would take a .340 Wby over a .338 UM.

I went with the 340wby myself, as it's probably the 2nd most popular 338mag, and ammo will always be available.
nothing wrong with the 338RUM/Edge,
my 340 is synthetic stocked, and actually kicks less than my 300win.mag. wood stock and braked, as far as personal feel goes.
225gr around 3000-3100fps, is pretty awesome.
can be loaded up to 275/300grs, although I think if you need more than 250 from the 340, you probably just want a bigger cal.

I've owned a 338 Win Mag, 338-378 Wthby. and a 338 RUM. If I had to pick one it'd be the RUM... by far the most accurate of the bunch! Recoil is stout but manageable and the ballistics are flat out impressive. The 338's are, in my opinion, the ultimate caliber for elk sized game. 225-250 grain pills deliver serious game killing power and fly like darts.

I'll take my .340 Weatherby. With the load that I have worked up for it I can take any animal that I want to shoot with it. The only thing that would restrict it in Africa would be the caliber restrictions on certain animals.
It can shoot further accurately than I care to shoot anymore, but for shots out to 500 yards it is a deadly round.
