My spring is officially over as of this morning, having filled out all of my KS and MO tags. I had a great season, some amazing hunts, and made some mind numbingly stupid mistakes..

After a crazy two days in Kansas for the early archery season, which involved me missing 4 times, and not recovering two other birds... I picked up the shotgun, and headed back to Kansas. My first day with the shotgun saw a bird come in with a very distinctive drumming sequence. I recognized it, because I had stuck an arrow in him 4 days before.. With the shotgun, I was able to finish the job.. Bird one done.

It was now time for Missouri's opener, so a buddy and I headed to a spot that has been good to us in the past. Right after flydown, we call a bird in and I tag out on my first MO bird. We stay put, and less than an hour later, had three toms strutting their way in. Buddy kills his, and the other two toms just stand around.. If this was Kansas, those gobblers would be in a world of trouble.

The coming weekend, Team Kabob invited me along on a draw hunt he had in SE KS. We show up on Friday night, to attend the mandatory meeting, and the managers show us the most unreal set of sheds I've ever seen...196 gross, I believe they said

It poured on us the first day, and the whole place was a sopping wet mess.. But, on day 2, TK was able to knock down his tom, right after flydown. It was a great hunt, in one of the neatest pieces of property I've ever been on. I'm not sure I've ever seen so many deer

After an unsuccessful second MO opener, I had to go work for a living for a little while, and with about 7 inches of rain over the next weekend, really wasnt able to get back out until this past Sunday, the last day of the Missouri season. After screwing up this bird off the roost, when I didn't realize he was strutting just 30 yards to my left, I left him alone, to chase other birds.
He fired back up shortly after, and I got up on the ridge he was working back and forth. After an intense 15 minute period with him inside 50 yards (which included me getting stuck in a fence as he was on his way in), I finally sealed the deal on my last Missouri bird, as he strutted in to 20 yards.

This morning's hunt was very uneventful, as I walked into a silent woodlot. I stood in a spot where a buddy and I had killed birds in the past, not knowing what to do, since nothing was gobbling. A bird finally gobbles, not 100 yards away. I sit down, call once. 5 minutes later, he flys down and walks in. Game over.

All in all, a great season, with tons of encounters, and great hunts with good friends.

Bring on next spring!

I had a great time hunting with you Fink, next time we can leave the mud in the fields! Glad you got your tags filled! I think that was the first of many trips!
