2016 spring bear apps in

SOMEBODY needs to bring some life to this forum!

Just finished with our 2016 spring bear apps for Oregon. Our primary plan is for our daughter to draw her first bear tag and hunt the West Blues hunt. I'm not really sure it's so much better than any other NE spring hunt, but it takes more points, so this will probably be her one chance to give it a try. I did kill a bear there a few years ago, so we have someplace to start. My wife and I will hope for second-choice tags here on the coast. We've usually been able to get them, but not always. Definitely not a high-success hunt, but it is a good excuse to hit the woods on a few spring evenings. Our 10-year-old will get his point so he can try West Blues in a couple more years. And then....

A NE unit first choice with my home unit as second choice for me. If I draw, it will probably be for the west because I had a successful NE spring hunt last year. The Snake is usually at least every other year. good luck to you all!

We were supposed to have a 100% chance to draw the Blues last year and didn't draw. Its been 6 years now since I've hunted spring bear because they switched everything up and you can't put in for SW as a second choice. So you can either build points or go hunting, not both. Stupid. Hope to draw the Blues this year though. It should be fun.

Frustrating, yes. Stupid, no. If they allowed both, your first choice would take longer to draw, your second choice would be a lot harder to draw, and everyone would be complaining again about point creep. You could always pick up a SW tag one year in between drawing an eastside tag; it would just be one year longer til you drew.

I'm already disappointed that the West Blues tag is taking more points to draw. As I said earlier, I'm not sure it's really that much better, but people see the draw odds and assume it must be.

I should be drawing a spring tag over east this year, but if things go wrong and the odds don't work out then I'll be running over to idaho to hunt some bears OTC there. You can do an Idaho hunt for less than $200 if you hunt units with a reduced cost tag, which are the same units that allow a second bear tag and also have the highest bear densities. Its sort of a win, win ,win.
