Hey everyone, just thought i'd post up a topic to get a few opinions from people that may know more about the area than just what I can find online.

Planning a archery trip for mule deer in 2016, and from the research I have done, i'm looking at SD or NE as both are really easy to get archery tags. I had heard that NE had a lot of deer die off in the last year or so, and I was hoping that maybe yall had some more input on how the mule deer situation is in either state. This will be my first big hunting trip out of state(I will be hunting OH for whitetail next year), and just trying to get as much info as possible before finalizing which state I should go to. Have been researching almost daily for the last month or so, just received all the booklets SD game and fish had to offer, and have read them front to back several times. Waiting for NE info to come in the mail now.

Out of the two, which state do yall feel would give me the best chance for a good public land bowhunt hunt? Or if you know of another state the has reasonably priced and easy to get archery tags for mule deer, please let me know.

Also, not looking for exact locations or anything, just state recommendations will be fine. Not trying steal anyones hotspots, lol. I can do more in-depth research into harvest records, success rates and all that good stuff. Turing 31 this year, and decided that I wanna start knocking things off my bucket list before time passes me by. Whitetails 2015, mule deer 2016, elk or prong horn 2017...also have 4 PP for the GA alligator draw..not sure when i'll cash those in and try gator.. All the trips, archery only and probably public land only unless I can find private land to hunt. :)

Anyway, thanks for any info you may have. Im really enjoying this forum...learning a lot from just searching around the forum!

Blackhills of South Dakota.

I've had several of my customers also recommend the Blackhills in SD. Just started doing research on that area, and it does seem promising. Before getting advice from people I had been looking at areas to the southeast of the Blackhills. Thanks for the input!

If you are looking at SD, make sure one of your booklets is the SD Hunting Atlas showing walk in areas, if you have not got it already, get one. 2014 is online, do not believe 2015 is out. Most years it will hold some very good options, not sure if the SW area was hit with the bad winter a few years back, it would take a phone call to the biologist/warden to know for sure. I'd suspect you could find viable options in that general area in three states. Arizona used to have some good public land archery hunts, some during the rut, which were OTC at one time, may still be. Could be a good back up plan if you don't draw out.

I'd choose sd over ne hands down. Much more large tracts of public in sd and deer quality I think is better on public. Both states have lower numbers than a few years back and some places are worse than others. I've hunted the areas around the Missouri river for several years the first part of November and had pretty good success, but haven't been anywhere else so I can't help you there.

That's a good point Tim about that storm a couple years ago. I know the SD Black Hills were hit especially hard. Down towards Hot Springs and that area they lost quite a few cows, so there was an effect on the deer pop. for sure.

South Dakota cut back tags this years during the firearms season. There were nurmerous counties that did not have doe tags most resulting from the EHD out break two years (they finally figured out the whitetails took a hit). There were some great whitetail and mule deer harvested. From your post your after mule deer, IMO they didn't suffer as the whitetails did. Mule deer #'s are fine from what I have seen.
