Was looking at area 27 but have heard you need at least 3 points to draw. Is this true?

3 points was a 70% chance to draw last year in the regular preference point drawing. 2 points was 100% draw in the special, higher priced, drawing. The reality is that the points needed to draw a permit change each year depending on the number of applicants in each point class that decide to apply. You have a small chance of drawing this permit with zero points as Wyoming sets aside some permits for the random drawing each year. Last year your odds were 1 in 46 in the random draw for area 27.

All of this information is easily accessible by clicking the hunting tab on the Wyoming Game and Fish department web site. At the bottom of the page there is a drawing odds line. You can look at drawing odds for any species for each of the last 6 years.

No problem- I get help with other states I'm not familiar with frequently. New web sites can be a little hard to navigate at first.

The odds change drastically from year to year depending on what the mags recommend net hype about individual units....its a constantly changing landscape.

If you are concerned about point creep, and most of us are, it can make sense to target a unit that historically takes a point less than you have. This web site added a new Hunt Finder function, includes PP's. I only tried two sets of criteria, but in both cases units I had in mind popped up, along with a few others. May help you evaluate options in addition to 27.
