Wanted to thank so many for their information, recommendations and overall sportsmanship as I prepared for 1st Colorado hunt since 2005. I was hunting in same area this year as 2005, but then I was with a group of 10-12 guys whom all had experience in the areas we hunted, this year was just my daughter and I, 30 miles back in a dead end dirt road in Gunnison National Forrest. The weather cooperated as far as camping out, we saw moose, long tail weasels, 5 elk the 1st day, and my daughter harvested her first buck of any species, and I my first muley, 5x5 I am still in love with. We probably saw about 30 mule deer during the trip, including 2 different 4x4's and a buck as high and heavy as mine, but probably 12-16" wider. I absolutely still believe public land elk are as elusive as any game animal. And we are in a high pressure area, although I don't think 25% of hunters get more than 100 yards from their quads/horses.
Either way, great trip, no elk tags filled, but memories forever, and daughters 1st buck
