Well the season has started for some (speed goats maybe deer). Going to start very soon for deer and elk (archery here in NM). Starting to think a lot about my and my wife's hunts. The wife is stoked. She is always talking and reviewing our scouting trips. Which brings me to the the thought of this post.....I revisited hunting about 6 years ago after a fifteen year break. Long story. My older brother and lots of fly fishing brought me back to revisit it. The last six years or so years of hunting and scouting have been fabulous. Lots of new places found and met some great folks (hunters) along the way. I haven't been all that successful long way if you look/judge at the heads on the wall. A decent mulie a few years ago. I also missed a decent 5x5 elk three years ago. However, I almost feel that the pre-hunt activities are as great as the actual week of the hunt. I've seen some great country and game and of course some great fly fishing in the high country. Picked some good mushrooms this past month and caught some great cutties. Not trying to get all sentimental but I feel as if the the journey to the hunt is or can be as great as the hunt. I was trying to explain this to a student (non-hunter) at work. I'm sure many other hunters feel the same way. Summer ending makes me think of the next summer and all it's scouting potential. Good luck to all this fall. We (hunters) see many places that a good portion of the population will never know that exists.

I am going with an old approach this year. When I was younger I didn't read anything about hunting or preparing for it, I just went hunting, well that's my approach this year. I haven't shot my bow since Memorial weekend, which was the first time I shot it since September of last year, I shot really well and decided I'm good. I haven't exercised to get ready for hunting either, I've just been working hard and calling that good. I haven't bought any new gear other than a tent, (that reminds me, I need a new quiver, mine broke last year) I think I can get buy with what I had last year. Not sure my tactics will work, but it seemed to work 30 years ago. Bow season starts Aug 29th I know where I'll be, and if I get the shot it will be within 30 yards.

Good luck everyone.

I wont be traveling west to hunt elk this year. Instead I will be going to Ontario to hunt Moose. DIY drop off camp via float plane.

Then heading to Nebraska to hopefully hunt mule deer during the later muzzlelooader seaosn.

Hope all is well and everyone have a safe season!

I wasn't planning on going west this year but a guy I went to H.S. With called and asked if I wanted in on a elk hunt in Colorado the last week of bow season. I haven't shot my bow in 3 yrs but I had time. Then I sprained my ankle at work a month ago and it's killing me but I'm still going. I have to use up vacation time from last year. Good luck to everyone and stay safe

Well my old approach worked! I shot my bull @ 20 yards, it was the 5th time I shot my bow since Memorial weekend. I had help with the pack out so I only had to make two trips, I'm in good enough shape but could be in better. I still have rifle deer seasons upcoming so I think I'll knock the dust off the 'Ol 25-06 and make sure it's still on.

I was thinking of you when I read this post. That's basically my style now to. Glad it worked.
