DFG's deer harvest statistics will always be off base until they make the hunter return/report cards mandatory. The regulations may say it’s a requirement but that doesn’t mean everyone complies. Similar to Nevada, I would like to see a penalty for not complying, whether successful or not. Until they change this matter, the data will simply be a poor estimate only. Maybe I wouldn’t say poor if I knew how they determined the ‘estimated deer kill’ from the reported.
I know DFG doesn’t generate the big revenue like other western states do but they could at least adopt some of their practices that have been proven to work year in and year out.

They have actually done that by increasing the prices of licenses and tags to all the traffic will bear.

Interesting. Over 4,000 deer (almost 1/3 of the harvest) disappear in 2011, and miraculously re-appear in 2013. Despite mountain lions, drought, poachers, etc.. Draw your own conclusions.

Makes you wonder about the accuracy of their numbers. I was also wondering why there was no report 2012?

I'm certain many guys use the harvest stats when applying, I've done it a couple times myself. Over the past 20 years I make my own conclusions by scouting. Nothing quite beats boots on the ground, especially with bogus statistics.
