I should add...thanks to anyone on Eastmans who lent advice here and there over the last 6 months as this hunt was coming together. We've already decided that the unsuccessful stalk on the final night was a good reason to come back and do this hunt again some spring - maybe 2016? I'm happy to be a resource for any other DIYers looking to do the same hunt. It's a logistically simple hunt but can be as physically demanding or easy as you want it to be. We ratcheted up the terrain to our liking, but there were some successful hunters walking and biking low elevation forest service roads too. I'd recommend it to anyone trying to fill the December-September void. I don't really enjoy turkey hunting, barely fish, and don't have enough gas money to trap, so that's a long time to be getting restless...a darn good fix if I say so myself.

Heck, I'll shove in the shameless plug. Overkill blow-by-blow, day-by-day account of all the hunt transpirings on my blog (The Outdoor Smorgasbord) over the next several weeks. If you're looking to do this hunt, there will be plenty more information and photos devolved there. Way more than I could possibly recount on the several forums I frequent. No active links, so I hope that doesn't break any forum rules...

I took my oldest daughters boyfriend on his first spot and stalk bear hunt this spring. We saw more than 20 bears during the week, the young fella passed on a nice 6 foot bear on the first day and then missed a nice one on the last day ( got a little excited ). It was a great trip and he's a fine young man and will make a good hunter.
I wound up taking this bear at not much more than 5 yards with a Marlin 450 guide gun after he ripped our camp apart.
