I was just noticing that there hasn't been a 2014 bear season thread started yet, unless I missed something. I will be heading out tomorrow and have high hopes of seeing some yogi's. Hopefully I will have some pics and video to add to the thread. Anybody else have success yet?

Well I didn't see any bears today, only one set of tracks from a decent bear. Saw plenty of deer and elk though so it was a good day out.

I spent a few days out in central MT last week but didn't see anything. I picked up a few nice sheds though. Jjenness, did you get out in the Snowies? I was going to make a trip out that way. Headed to the northern crazies tomorrow to scout some new elk ground out and see if there's any bear activity.

Here is the problem with baiting black bears in alaska, darn grizzies.. The first pic is a grizzly walking into the bait while I was skinning my black bear on monday. As a Solo hunter this kind of situation sucks, on the ground with fresh meat ! Luckily he saw me about the time I saw him & I scared him off. If ya think you got big "marbles" then this is the rush for you !!

Just returned yesterday MSUcat61! Due to a couple travel complexities, we only got in 8 days of hunting but saw 5 bears. All boars. Hunting higher, more rugged stuff I guess we weeded out a bunch of the sow/cubs??? At least that's my theory.

1 of those bears was a huge boar grizz which we got to watch for a while - quite the treat. Wolves put us to sleep a couple nights. Saw every ungulate in the book. More wildflowers and migrating songbirds than the mind could fathom.

Only decided to make 2 stalks all week. Fortunately, the first paid off in a handsome black bear. We ran out of daylight on the other mature boar on the final night - a FINE slate black boar. Mine squared in the mid 5' range and weighed 175-190 pounds I'd guess. Black guard hairs with dark brown roots. Gorgeous bear for my first bear. Snapped this picture as he was coming down off the top of the mountain into a big cut.

Killed him 4 miles from the truck which made for a nice hump out the next morning.

The good kind of work though.
