2011 Whitetail

I really thought I had posted this on here last year, but apparently I was mistaken. I got in a little trouble for shooting this deer considering the circumstances, but I survived to tell about it. We had a concert to go to opening night of deer season and got in real late. I overslept and there was no way my wife could get ready in time to get to the woods, so she said to go without her. Well, her stand is the quickest one I could get to and it started breaking daylight before I even left the house and 10 minutes later I found myself sitting on her stand. As luck would have it he came running across the field to check on a doe that had been out feedings since I climbed in and he met my age requirement of 5yo. My wife has hunted it almost every weekend for the past 4 years and has been skunked, I hunt it 2 times in 4 years and I'm 2 for 2.

Good looking buck, congrats. I imagine your wife wasn't too pleased you killed it in her stand. I hope to one day shoot myself a whitetail!

Thank you. It didn't take her as long to get over this one as it did one I'd shot a couple years prior. The thing is in our area, if you see a fully mature whitetail out during daylight, you better shoot him because that might be the only time you ever see him.

It did make me think long and hard about doing it again last season. She had a buck she picked out that she wanted to kill and as luck would have it I had him running does around under my tree during bow season. Would have been my highest scoring buck to date with a bow & I watched him just walk on.....that was my good deed, I'm either shooting him or the one she considers a pet this upcoming season.

I really want her to shoot one, in fact, I let her pick where she wants to hunt now so that whatever happen it's not my fault and I will not make suggestions. That way anything that happens isn't my fault.

This is the one that got shot a few years back that presented a problem.

and this one is the "pet". Been able to track this one from the time he was a yearling up to this past season when he hit the 5yo mark

Those are some nice bucks, not so sure I would have passed up "hers" when it was standing next to my stand. And without question, her "pet" would be tasting some kind of sharp steel or hot lead!

I think I'd rather shoot the pet just because of the history. He had a leg injury at 2 that had him gimping around for a good while & pulled way down in weight and he quit favoring it between 3 and 4. He also didn't have any browtines from 1-4 and finally put them on, granted, they're not much, but they're there. My main reason for passing up hers was because I have been chasing this one since 09. He's older than dirt and not going to be around much longer. Only reason why he's out in the daytime in a pic is because he didn't know what to do with the 19" of rain we got that weekend and was stir crazy.

That's a good looking whitetail too. I know the feeling when you get fixated on a particular animal, makes you pass up animals you normally wouldn't. Becomes a personal vendetta!

It's very personal with that deer and at this point I honestly don't care if I shoot him or one of the neighbors. Him going in someone's freezer and on their wall beats the heck out of finding him as a dead head. The last picture I got of him was after season ended, so I might have another crack at him.

Hey packmule, good luck with that one. News flash, it will always be your fault. Lol. Those are some great lookin bucks for sure. I think you made a good choice passing up hers last year. I for one really hope you get a crack at that old buck. He's a stud!Good luck this coming season!!

Thank you. There's 2 more that I'll shoot if I happen to see them just because I've been eyeballin' them for the same length of time and are about as old. I figure it will always end up being my fault. I'll admit the first one was my fault because I withheld some info from her. She saw the buck the evening before but couldn't get a shot at him because he crossed to fast with a group of 6 does. I had seen those 6 does hanging out at the front of our field every morning while walking back to the truck...so I hunted there the morning after she saw him and ended up shooting him. At least I'm smart enough not to fill her in on those minor details
