Anyone have any success with 2 way radios working in the back country for use when hunting with a partner? If so, what brand do you recommend? I've heard some dont work well in the mountains.

the longer the antenna the better the service. like cc said...even if it says a 4o mile radio, if there's a ridge between ya you wont be hearing anything

We started using the Rino's this last year. They have a radio that I never could hear on but they also have the pinging feature showing where others that you are linked up with are. This feature is also line of sight but handy when it was working. Good luck and God bless

Another plug for the Rhinos........ensure you have 5W selected.......you can also transmit waypoints to one another. Its essentially like a miniature military style data link. It works well. Someone who has read the instruction booklet though can hack your comms if they know what they are doing comms. ( scan/code function). I use it as my primary GPS, meat recovery and keeping track of newbies that are in the woods with me.

The only advantage with marine VHF is that away from the ocean or lakes, nobody uses them, so they never get crowded. But I'm not sure using them is legal. Used to be that the only approved use was on the water....ship to ship or ship to land base. I do know of people who got cited from the USCG for non water use. But those were in the days when you needed a license to operate them. May be different today.

VHF is still line of sight, no matter what the wattage.

Yup marine radios are illegal on land, but if far enough from a big body of water they don't enforce it to much, but that depends on who you run into. We use the two ways for coyote hunting here and seems the range gets worse all the time. Lucky to get a mile. Marine used to work way better but they aren't very good anymore for some reason.
