We head out a week from today. Anyone else hunting first season here? We're in northern CO, and looks like there is a chance of some snow on the ground, which is a welcome change from last year's 65 degree weather. Talked to a bow hunter in the area and he thought rut was running a week late too. Fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone.

Good luck- keep us posted on how the hunt goes. Elk were still rutting in Southern Wyoming as of Monday so you may have some calling.

I'm headed back to camp (same GMU we muzzleloader/archery hunt) the 11th to glass for a few days in prep for my sons tag. We got snowed off the mountain Sept 23rd so anything is possible. Peak rut (as defined as the most cows in heat ready to breed) was 22/23 Sept.....that's consistent every year. Any rutting activity we see during first rifle is cows getting bred that missed the last cycle.
2 Oct Report from NW Colorado: Bulls are starting to separate from the main herds and put on the feed bag, 2nd estrus cows that did not get bred will come into heat roughly the 13th and we will see a little spike in rut activity for a few days to a week.

Headed out to a new unit - 18/181. On paper not the best unit but the In-laws moved into the area a couple of year ago and that is where they plan to start hunting so I'll follow along. On the positive side, they have met a local who is also a guide and is willing to show us around the area and tag along with him so that is exciting. He has a lot of camera's out and horses available so fingers crossed.
Finishing picking up some last minute items so the adrenaline is also picking up. Will probably start dreaming of the hunt in a week or so. We have young kids so plan on hitting it hard for the 4 days I have off!!!

I have a cow tag for NW Colorado. Taking my little boy with me. Hoping he gets to see some rut action, hear some bugles, and pack a back strap or 2.

My wife has a bull tag and we are in fill the freezer mode with our elk supply running low.
I have a cow tag for the same unit so we decided to camp this year. We will be setting up Friday and staying until the tags are filled or the end of the season rolls around.

I read a few long range forecasts and the weather is looking relatively warm and dry for the next two weeks. Midday temps in the 50-60's nights, upper 20's at elevation. A little cooler than last year, but not much. At least the camping part won't be a muddy mess if it's dry. Was really hoping for a few inches of the snow...
