Since I killed my doe in Sept, then 4 animals in Wyoming, then my buck- I've had a pretty healthy supply of venison.

I still have about 40# left and I've been eating like a king!

My wife went out of town for a few days and I forgot to lay out something for dinner. I went to Meijer with the intention of buy some chicken to grill at 2am but I got sidetracked by a manager's special Tbone that had a $5 price tag on a $25 steak. I picked that sucker up, marinated it for a couple hours and threw it on the grill.

My first mistake was forgetting that venison is so lean I don't have to worry about flare ups. After a near disaster, I moved the steak out of the inferno with no damage. I grilled it to 140 degrees and let it set for 5 minutes.

The juices stayed beautifully but I was so disappointed in my first bite. I've cooked a lot of meat and am no slouch on the grill. But I feel I've lost my appetite for beef after eating so much healthy delicious venison.

To test my result I grilled my wife a steak on her return and she had similar results- It was a good steak but not venison. In a fearful panic, I ordered a steak from Ocharley's who has a delicious louisian sirloin.

Again, I left disappointed. As I type I am picking the remainder of my lunch from my teeth...venison is delicious. Im not sure I'll ever bother buying beef again so long as I have venison in the freezer.

Headed to Texas in a couple weeks for axis deer and a years supply of pork. I found a local Amish guy who sells chickens for cheap so im gonna buy a bunch, grain feed for a little then butcher.

No more beef, no more store bought meat...it just isn't as good!!!

I think about this every time I pass a feed lot. Glad to know my dinner wasn't standing in its' own feces while doped up on antibiotics and growth hormone.

I am not to the point where I am ready to give up either venison or beef. A good beef steak or deer tenderloins either properly marinated and cooked is my favorite. My mother could cook cow elk that was tasted better than any beef. Were luck to have choice !

i feel the same way i can hardly eat beef now after growing up on venison. me and the girlfriend got a couple beef steaks a few months ago for a treat and they seemed so fatty. it is funny because when i was a kid a beef steak was my absolute favorite food! i am happy to be able to know where my meat comes from.

I agree. My wife and I haven't bought any beef or chicken in 21 years. With NC's liberal deer limits, and with my entire family hunting, it takes all year to eat them all (20ish). Whitetail, waterfowl, turkey, and recently...elk, and don't get me started on fish (salt and freshwater). I will say that we do eat out occasionally, and that's the only time we'll eat domestic meat. I'm not too keen on eating inferior meat that was raised in a pen!

Recently took elk steaks to a church grill out where everyone else was eating beef ribeyes. They couldn't get over how delicious the no gristle, no fat elk was. I made a believer out of them.

Have a good friend, he grew up on a Rez for much of his youth, the elders called the Govt beef, Greasy Beef. He still calls it greasy beef, and I agree. If we buy some, which is rare, twice in the last 25 years, it is always grass fed and finished by some one we
know who is selling it and needs to. It is a PIA to brown commercial beef burger with all the grease...

Last year we bought a 4h beef to support the kids, and I must say it was delicious! Nothing compares to wild game though. We did shoot a cow elk this year who is very hard to eat. She is old and tastes horrible. So I have been buying a little more beef than usual because her burger is hard to eat.

Got lucky this year. I was able to take a nice mule deer buck and a cow elk so it will be quite some time before we buy any beef. We do buy some chicken occasonally
We had a party last weekend and I made some green chili made with hatch chilis and nobody could believe it was cow elk. Same with the Italian sausage we had made with the cow elk, it is delicious.

I say everyone should eat what they want and what they like. I do enjoy deer and elk, but it will never beat a good beef steak to my taste buds.

One thing I do think hunters should be careful about is downgrading the beef that the producers in the US are selling. Many of these ranchers are landowners that decide if their lands are open to hunters or not.

I've never had anything better than a choice cut perfectly cooked ribeye beef steak. Too bad my wallet doesn't like them.

I bought a quarter of a beef from a guy that I work with. It is grass fed and ranch raised. He does not send them to a feed lot to fatten them up so the beef is healthier and resembles wild game. It tastes awesome. I like to mix the burger from that and my deer or elk burger and there is virtually zero game taste in the burger. Although I like game meat and eat a lot of it my favorite is a NY strip with a little trim fat. Nothing better taste wise.

Beef tastes a lot better when you grass feed it yourself, kill it and send to the butcher. None of the doped up beef for me. I'm lucky my in laws raise beef cattle and give me a half a beef and a pig every year for hauling hay, feeding and doing farm work throughout the year, works out great for me. I do love venison better though.
