Some of you might remember that I was given an old Ford Tractor. It's a 1941 9N that is stock as far as I know. It sat all winter and I final got to work on it this week. Bought a new battery and tried to start it today. Started to crank over and then quit. Then the hot wire to the solenoid started to fry. Smoked and melted some before I got the battery disconnected. My guess it that the old foot starter is stuck closed as it won't come up at all.

OH well tomorrow is another day!

Believe it or not...it's 6v positive ground. First positive ground I've ever worked on!
Many moons ago a lot of vehicles were positive ground. But that was back where every manufacture came up with their own theory of electricity. Then they standardized it and told everyone that they were now going to have a negative ground. That is except for any and all telephone companies. They still work on the theory of a positive ground.

Great old tractor! My grandfather had a couple old 9n's that he used until he died a few years ago. He had one that was original 6 volt positive ground and one that had been converted to a normal 12 volt system. and one that had a home made looking front end loader that I'm suprised never killed anyone (not entirely sure that was a 9n). The 6v machine he used for 40 years to shred his pastures and had very few issues with it. I'm no help on a fix for you but good luck getting her up and running!

I've got a 1942 9n It was converted to a 12v. It spun a main bearing, so I bought a flathead off my brother. He is a gearhead, he is going to help me convert it. You can buy adapter kits online, the one I'm looking at is awesome henry. Good luck CC

Looks like you'll get it figured out CC. Keep us posted on your progress. I know one thing, one of your wife's stealth cushions is going missing soon!

Wondered how long it was going to be before you chimed in on this post. :D You are right, don't think I'll be spending many hours in the seat without some kind of a cushion on the seat!

Got out my repair manual and looked at what is involved in tearing down the foot starter. I am pretty sure the return spring inside is rusted and needs a good cleaning or replacement. I will also have to replace the battery cable as the insulation is all melted.

I remember driving one of those tractors all to well when I worked for a cattle dealer. Funny thing, I was loading some manure into this nice gentlemen's 5 window 50-51 chevy, on my last load I backed away from the truck and after I cleared the truck the hydraulic hose broke and down came the bucket hard! You shoulda seen that mans face! Good luck CC

Finally got around to working on it. My shoulder surgery kinda got in the way. A friend works on tractors and he cam over and we started. Got the cowl/fuel tank off, radiator out and took off the generator. Radiator is going to be boiled out, rodded out. Generator rebuilt. We also realigned the steering.

My project is a 3000 ford. I will have to get year model. Motor and all is good except clutch is suspect and steering needs help, anyway it will start and work. Lots more to do to it. I want it to be goto farm handi tractor. Box blade, drag, sprayer, stuff like that.
I know you will enjoy getting yours to go and your 9n looks better than mine already.

Really bummed out about the tractor. After we started working on it, tried to turn it over today. Engine wouldn't budge. Looks like lots of gas in the oil too. Looks like it could cost up to 2K to get it running. All the suspension is shot and tranny needs some work too. Looks like it is going to cost more than its worth.

Looks like I know why my ex neighbor gave it to me. At least the brush hog and blade are worth something.

Sounds like it is time to pull the spark plugs and poor some oil down into the cylinders and see if you can get it to turn over. A little bit of rust in just one cylinder will stop it from turning over.
