Hey guys lucked out and finally drew a Gila elk tag. We got the second archery season in 16b. We will be going in on foot about 5 miles or so to set up camp and hunt from there. Im not sure where to start we will be doing some scouting but its a big unit. I know the west end of the unit was burned last year. so my question is where to start? would your guys start in the north end, the west end, the south end or right in the middle around the cliff dwellings?any info is greatly appriciated

Congrats on the tag NMHUNTER. I drew there a few years back, didn't get a bull but seen some good ones. We hunted west of loco mountain towards airplane mesa and that area. I don't know if the fire hit that area or not but they were in there...good luck!

The whitewater-baldy fire mainly burned 16B and that is why the fire got to be so huge because there are no roads in 16b to get fire crews in there. Good luck and hope you get one. In 2-3 years I guarantee that 16B will be the hot elk unit in the gila because when the grass comes back and greens up, thats where all the elk will be.
