I finally hit the early rifle tag 9 years in the making. I have hunted a lot more down in 22 and haven't hunted 11 in a few years and that was mostly along Success Loop area. However I did see a big beautiful 7pt on Camel Peak. But I am thinking of hunting the east side but I don't have much knowledge on that area. Would love some pointers if anyone would care to share. I will be doing a few fishing trips to Cave Lake with some scouting time.

It's a good group of guys here and lots of Nevada guys with tons of knowledge. Stick around awhile and join in the conversations. It's worth it for sure. Welcome

My brother had a ML tag there last year. He ended up getting a little guy on the southwest end of Duck Creek basin. We hunted the east side near Cleve as well. Saw some decent bulls but none my brother wanted to hike for.

Wow, getting a bull elk tag in Nevada is quite a rare thing you would think a person would be willing to work hard for a nice one.
I had a friend who drew a bull elk rifle tag and the fool shot the first elk he saw on the road, a spike.

The east slope of the Schells can be very intimidating to a LOT of guys.

Yup, the hardest part of hunting elk in Nevada is getting a tag.

I think that was the bigger problem, he drew it with 0 points. First try.

I drew a bull tag this year in Area 16-17. I plan to work a bit harder. I just have to do some scouting and learn the area again. Haven't hunted there since I was in high school.

The snow storm really made it tough to get around. I really thought my hunt was over when we seen more weather coming in. I actually went home. I couldn't stay away so I decided to go back up on the 16th. Still not a lot of access. However, I finally got him on Thursday 19 Nov. Not a monster but it filled the tag.ELK 2015.jpg

Good job, nice reward for all the hard work put in! That cold weather is great for the meat.

May I ask what kind of temps you had and what was the elevation where you shot him?

On 11 Nov we watched it drop to 0 before going to bed(about 9pm). When we woke my weather station said the low got down to -15 that was the day I decided to go home. For the most part the temps were all over the place lows 9-25 highs up to 50.
Probably shot him at about 7800-8000ft. We were on the west side and we glassed the tops and seen one bull (same day I shot this one) the entire time we were there. So pretty much all the bulls we seen were fairly low.

Thanks for the info. 65 degree temp swing is pretty wild.
