Any suggestions on what zone to apply for if you had 1 point average with a 4 man party? We aren't looking for 80" bucks

Thanks!

grizzly,

I see your a new member with only a few posts. You are using one of the best free hunting forums out there. I see you have already recommended one of eastmans direct competitors instead of the product from the company that you are using currently for free?

I have no clue who eastmans competitors are. My point is for this gentlemen to do his research on where to hunt. The tools are out there. Just use them. And what does me being a new member have to do with anything?

Instead of correcting me why don't you tell this guy what unit to apply in.

Go to the Wyoming game and fish website, look art the draw odds, then check it the public land, wiha land, and hma's in that unit.

Thanks bud! I have like 17 tabs open on my computer looking at those, I was just wondering if anyone on here had personal experience to back up what the numbers were saying! Appreciate the info!

Look at the special draw odds page on the G&F website. Looks like areas in the NE part of the state can be had with 1 PP and some areas in the 40's. Draw odds will change next year with the price increase so who really knows.

I would not rely on just one source of reference for areas, be it Eastman's or any other service. None of them are 100 % right about the hunting in any given unit. Even Eastman's lists some elk areas as having difficult access when they don't.

Good start is asking actual hunters on this site and others for advice.
Be aware some put out false facts to help their draw odds.
Areas with difficult access can still be good hunting areas. I would also not be afraid to make some phone calls to landowners after this season to ask about access for next year. I make my inquiries before I apply not after I have a tag.

I'm not going to try to sway you from hunting pronghorn if that's what you want to do, but in my limited experience there is a great deal of difference between a 1 point unit and a 2-3 point unit, primarily being the amount of land available to access. I've hunted 2 units that can now be drawn with one point, and although if you worked hard you could kill a 'lope, it wasn't the "real" western experience you're probably hoping for. This year, I'm hunting an area that took 2 points in the regular draw, and there is way more accessible land in good antelope-type country than we could possibly look over in a week.

My preference would be to hold off another year or 2 for a better quality hunt.

IMO, the better experience for next year would be a deer or even elk hunt, even if it's just for cows. Of course there's the probability that out of 4 hunters, not everyone will fill a tag, but that's a real possibility in some of the easy draw pronghorn areas also.

Good luck whatever you end up deciding.

Has anyone hunted 22 or 16? Any pointers would be fantastic!
I agree: don't go to 16. It has lopes but a ton of hunters on the little publicly accessible land. Just because you see public land in a unit doesn't mean you can get to it to hunt. Unit 22 has some public but it gets pounded as well. Go opening morning or way late in the season to have a better chance for success. Both of these units have had leftovers the past few years. I would look elsewhere if I had points. Just my 2 cents.
