Well, if it could go wrong, it has. Anyway, due to circumstances beyond my control, I am finally headed to Nevada to scout for elk for 4 days. If anyone has any fresh info on 061/071 I would sure appreciate a shout out. I have the Sept 1-16th muzzleloader bull elk tag. It appears this may be my only scouting trip...

Hey Randy, I had a cow tag in 71 3 years ago. Saw several large bulls up on top of copper mountain. you can access the west side from the Bruneau River area through Prunty ranch. They were up about 92 to 9500 feet. Several nice shooters then. Good luck and God bless

If they have started the rut I would concentrate my efforts in the lower country along the Bruneau River. If not Copper Mtn like luckynv said would be a good place to look. I have seen a lot of elk sign there. You can also access it from the main road that divides 071 and 072. If you drive up this road you will see classic elk habitat on the west side of the road. There are big basins with miles of aspen, beaver ponds and open meadows in between, it is beautiful elk country. Whether you access it from the east or west side it one heck of a hike in. Once on top it's not too bad.
I have also seen elk around Tennessee Mtn which is east of Copper mtn.
Good luck on your hunt.

My buddy just came back from 5 day cow hunt in Copper mtn area. Said he seen lots of bulls but no cows. I'll have more info for you once he gets back today/tomorrow if he is willing to divulge particular areas of where he was.

I have hunted the area east of Martin creek the last two years. The area is full of elk! If you are not familiar with this area, it is just south of Big Bend Campground. I would not even consider the area near Copper mtn unless you have horses.

I don't think I was in the Martin Cr. area on this trip...I spent quite a bit of time around Merritt Mtn, Tennesee Mtn, and a little time around the Mahoganies. Copper Mtn looks to be beyond my physical abilities. I am in pretty good shape, but I am also 61 with a artificial hip and knee. Lots of people around...archery antelope, archery cow elk, junior deer hunters, and atv riders. I liked the looks of the country around Merritt Mtn. It is a long haul to anywhere...no one place to camp stands out over another.

Once you leave highway 225, (coming from Elko) take the dirt road toward Big bend Campground. The campground is about 12 miles in. About two miles south of the campground, take forest service road 056. There are many areas to camp about a 1/2 mile or so once you take 056. Plenty of shade too. I have hunted that area the last three years. Twice for deer, once for cow elk. Very easy hiking compared to Copper mtn. area. I know all about hip replacements....had one myself. Atv's are the best way to get around this area. If you don't have, don't worry. The roads are good enough to use a truck.
If you are coming south on 225, the road your want to take is on the east side of 225 at the south end of Wildhorse Res.

Ok, just to play the devils advocate. How do you plan on packing out an elk if you are successful with a bad knee and hip? Perhaps you will get lucky and find a "road elk." During the rut this just might happen, the few times I have seen elk rutting in NV they were in the lower country.
Also like fling-em said there are lots of places to camp. Most every creek with a road near it has primitive camping spots.

I believe I was in that area a couple of times...is that the road with the old Gold Creek USFS fire station? There were several camps in there already, hunting cow elk and antelope. Nice area.
Thanks for the tip!

Well, I said I had a artificial hip and knee...not necessarily bad ones. I helped pack out a 380 bull from the Grafton area a few years ago. You just lighten the load and go slow, maybe take an extra trip. Also, I won't be alone, I should have 2 or three good packers along. Find elk, kill elk, pack it out if you can't get a atv to it. Done deal.
