    Dew claws

Ok here is a question for you guys that have a lot more elk hunting experience than I do. Do cow elk have dew claws? Obviously the bulls have dew claws but when we find tracks should we automatically dismiss those tracks that show no dew claws? Or perhaps bulls have more pronounced dew claws.

    Son's Bull Elk

We just got back from a great week of hunting for my son's bull elk. Hunted hard all week and saw elk every day. Lots of cows and small bulls. We saw quite a few big bulls as well but some were in places that would have been nearly impossible to pack out. This bull was one of a group of 5 bulls...

    Arizona elk hunt

Here are a few shots of the amazing country my brother and I hunted in AZ last month. He had opportunities at some small bulls but was holding out for a big one. He didn't fill his tag but we had a great hunt. I never knew bugles we so loud when the bulls are screaming at you from 20-30 yarfs...

    Hard work paid off

Just spent 13 days hunting elk with my brother on his AZ archery tag. Every day was up at 2:30 am and climbng some incredibly steep canyons up and down. We had a small 5 point at 27 yards on the second day of hunting but he elected to pass. Hd several other close encounters but no shooters. The...

    ATV trouble

My brother and I have been hunting for his AZ bull elk since last friday. We found a meadow where the bulls were rutting and putting on quite a show there were 7 or 8 bulls and one was BIG. Over the last two days we got after them but were not able to get one in bow range. We found their bedding...

    Edible mushrooms?

I've been in Arizona helping with my brothers elk hunt for the last week and these mushrooms are all over the mountains under many pine trees. The immature one look just like the button mushrooms you buy in the store and this is what they look like when the mature. Any of you guys know if they...

    Google Chrome

This is a question totally unrelated to hunting but is anyone who uses Google Chrome having problems with it the last couple of days? Today it will not even connect for me.

    Federal Fusion ammo

My son has a bull elk rifle tag and is leaning towards using my wife's .270 instead of my 7mm Mag because mine almost always whacks him over his eye. Anyway he bought a box of Federal Fusion 150 grain bullets and a box of Federal Trophy Bonded Tip ammo in 130 grain. Both group very well in that...

    boot care

What do you guys use on your boots? I have used Snow Seal, Mink Oil, and the spray on silicone products. To me so far they seem about the same for water resistance. I find the silicone spray the easiest, but the leather looks so dry it makes me think it's gonna be like a sponge. The other 2 at...

    Extreme southern Nevada archery

My son and I went out for a couple of days for his archery hunt in area 271-272. He didn't have much time due to work. The temp was around 100- 105 during mid day almost unbearable. Saw some nice country, very few tracks and only found the smallest trickle of water, a puddle maybe 6 inches long...

    Premium loads from yesterday

You guys remember these? I've had them sitting in my closet since 1996 when I got my bull elk tag in NV. I was shocked when I saw what the price was. Back then this was one of the few factory loads using premium bullets. The price was $19.69. At the time I was buying ammo for my 7mm Mag for...

    Meat grinder question

I got out my dad's old manual meat grinder powered by "armstrong" to try out because I've never used it. I was surprised how easy it was, I thought I would be turning the crank with all my strength. I'll be using it quite often now that I know. I ground about 5lbs of elk shoulder and 1lb of pork...

    Home protection

Thought you guys might like to see my wife's pistol that we keep bedside for protection. We bought this way back in 1983 it's a Colt Trooper MKIII Nickel plated in 357 Mag. She is quite proficient with it. Back when we bought it she wasn't familiar with guns so I chose a revolver because I...

    Worst stuck pics

Anybody have pics of their rig being stuck? Here is a bad pic on my first pick-up stuck miles south of Harrison Pass in the Ruby mountains of Nevada. If I had a high-lift jack we probably could have gotten ourselves out, but I didn't have one yet. Had three guys stop and try to pull us out to no...

    Truckee River

Just got back from the Reno/Tahoe area and was shocked at how the Truckee river is almost gone. We were there last July and there was still enough water to fish. On the drive up I 80 between Verdi and Truckee the river is just a trickle. I certainly hope this drought doesn't last much longer.

    Tahoe crayfish

Just got back from Reno/Tahoe. Family had a pretty good time since we only had to spend 2 days with the in-laws during the week we were there. My daughter decided she wanted to eat some crayfish since we always see them in Lake Tahoe every time we go there. We caught about 25 of them in about an...

    Red chili elk

Made some red chili using some shoulder from the cow elk I got last winter. Some of you guys might think it's strange to use potatoes but my wife and I like them in our chili.
