A mostly true story about a mouse I killed tonight

Here's a photo of a successful mouse hunt with my brother Dave. It was a tough hunt and I will always cherish the memory as it was my last hunt with him before he died. I can look back to the glory days when the mice were under every piece of furniture at the hunting shack. Unfortunately...

    Another reason to vote Republican!!

Elk hunting in Wyoming, 2015. We got nailed by two feet of snow the day before opener and another 1 1/2' the next day. It was a tough hunt, but what a grand adventure. On day four I got the 6x6 that's my avatar pic.

    License and permit in Buffalo

Hey guys, looking for some last minute info due to a perfect storm screwing up my usually well made plans. The trip to WY was bumped up a few days due to work schedules, and my printer just went to hell. I had ordered the ORV permit, but it likely won't get here before we leave...So, where in...

    .243 Savage Elk

This is what happens when a 185 gr. Barnes TSX hits a bull elk shoulder at 480 yards from a .338. The bullet completely shattered both shoulders and was recovered under the far hide.

    CO Muzzy Help

JimP called it about them "blowing up". In both cases, my MN deer were shot thru the ribcage and blew a baseball sized hole out the other side. I found chunks of lead inside the deer while butchering. I couldn't use the Powerbelts in CO, and shot my mulie with the Thor bullet. A lot of...

    Food in camp

When backpacking, your food is likely only about a pound a day per person, so hanging isn't much of an issue. I bring plenty of line along (I find the next size up from P-cord works well). You can actually hang a 100# pack on the stub of a branch by using two lines. Have a good steel ring or...

    Campfire when hunting backcountry?

After posting the picture of tenderloins on the grill in the above post, I saw that the fire appears to be surrounded by dry grass. Actually, we had been tent-bound in a snow/fog weather pattern and it had only melted that day. The ground was actually slushy to walk on. I was a firefighter for...

    Campfire when hunting backcountry?

I love having a fire after we're tagged out or headed off the mountain the next morning. I never have a fire until then when I am coyoteing out.

    Trekking Pole Help

Yeah, it sure was. It was one of those trips where I was introducing a younger hunter to the joys of deep immersion hunts in the mountains. He actually shot a very nice 4x4, but his job put limitations of only 5 days to hunt. So, in my case it turned into a meat hunt since it took a full day...

    CO Hybrid draw

I am planning to put in for an elk point again this year (making it #11), and will put my app. for a hybrid tag for one of those NW impossible to draw without max point units. There are so few NR tags, that I wonder if they ever actually have any hybrid drawn. When looking at the draw stats...

    Coffee

Coffee brewing while on a solo mule deer hunt in the Maroon Bells, CO. I shot the buck with my MZL the next morning, and didn't get my coffee that day. Since then I always bring some chocolate coated coffee beans to munch on during the packout.

    Cow or Calf?

I am looking for some input from those of you who have shot both cow and calf elk. How do they compare as far as the quality of the meat? The reason that I am asking is that I have a late season type 6 tag in WY that is pretty much a slam dunk as I can access the public land where the herd...

    Miracle shot

I am a so-so shotgunner, a respectable rifle shot, and have always been a superb pistol shot. I think it goes back to my days as a police officer when I was on the state pistol team using my Colt Python. When I attended the FBI Academy 25 years ago, I missed the "Possibles Board" by one shot...

    Miracle shot

Here's a coyote that I got while snowmobiling in Montana last year. As a retired police officer, I have a CC that is valid in all the states, and in today's world find that I am packing most of the time. We were snowmobiling in ID,WY, & MT, and I had checked the laws on yotes and was good to...

    Exit Wounds..lets see them.

Yeah Scott it sure was, but I still came back with a freezer full. Right on the shoulder is not my preferred spot, but from 550 yards, I guess that I can't complain about it too much. It does show just how tough those Barnes bullets are. I actually put 3 shots on that bull, the 1st thru his...

    Exit Wounds..lets see them.

This was the front shoulder on a mature 6x6 bull elk. This was the entry side, and the bullet shattered the far shoulder also with the pictured bullet found in the meat of the far shoulder. 550 yards, .338 WM, 185 gr. Barnes TSX.

2017 elk success thread, post em up

I finally got my photos downloaded. My CO deer hunt was unsuccessfull, but the guided WY elk hunt turned out to be another fabulous adventure. Six of us headed out from Minnesota on Oct. 20th, and spent a couple nights in Jackson to start the acclimation process. We ranged in age from 17...
