OTC elk archery?

First efforts to research Montana here guys....

I am going on my ninth year elk hunting this year, and all nine have been OTC here in Idaho. My last three have been the successful ones, and after learning how to track, and call them would comfortably say I could do so any place.

I have heard of the nightmares of some states with non residents...

I am looking for some recommendations of areas near the west side( looks more fun) or any side maybe for a non resident to enjoy seeing some elk. Not a bone horder... But elk in general would be fun to see more at one time while hunting.

Ok, well that's acceptable then. Wish I could help out but I don't know much about the units out on the western border.

Can't you pick up a second tag, if there are any left over after you fill your first tag?

Not here, and I dont like draws... Why bother here when I know where the elk are in the OTC areas!!

So no one yet has any areas of recommendation? Not asking for your camp... A unit would be nice... And I am not a forum newbie here peeps...

I thought you could buy a leftover tag in Idaho at the NR price? MT is so expensive now and wolves have done alot of damage and personally I would rather hunt Idaho anyday.

I would decide if you want to compete with wolves and grizzlies first. If you don't mind them then western or SW have some good areas. If you don't want to bother seeing big predators then I would look at the central to eastern areas. Don't discount some of the smaller mountain ranges as they can be very productive. If you decide to look more central let me know and we will see what we can come up with.

Since you already hunt in Idaho the Idaho/Montana border would be a good place to start. I have a buddy who harvested his first elk ever there this year with his bow, a nice 6pt to boot! Units 300, 321, 328, and 329 would be worth looking into.

I hunt both states each year, I don't get to border hunt very often but hey, those are good units too. If you are doing well in Idaho you will likely do just fine in MT. Anthony is right the border hunts are a good start!

325 is a good unit also in the blacktails. Not a border hunt but real close.
