Hello. I am new to the forum. I am a nonresident, and have been hunting WY for about 5 years now, only in Reg Y. I have always had good luck finding deer as I am not afraid of getting off the road and putting miles on, but would like to try a different area looking for bigger deer. I only have 2 PP. I was thinking of applying in the Special Draw this year for area 89 type 1 as my first choice {knowing I probably won't get} and trying for Reg H on my second choice. So I can retain my points. My question is, does anyone know the draw odds on Reg H as a second choice in the NR Special Draw? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. I already had looked here, maybe I am reading it wrong. It shows all of the Special Reg H went out to first choice applicants. Although in the MRS of Eastmans they say it is possible as a second choice option. Am I missing something?

Just look in the random draw for 2nd choice odds. H was 8% last year 2nd choice. Not alot better then the odds on 89 first chioce, but you could definitely draw Y as your third choice if you wanted to try it.

Trying to get H as a buddy should have an elk tag, and wants to try out there. I am not counting on me getting my elk tag so looking for options for deer without burning the points I do have. 8% is not very good odds though. Is H worth burning 2 points on? Any advise?

Your welcome! I have no first hand experience with H. I think it could be a good hunt but like most regions scouting would probably be very helpful.

Will be making a scouting trip before season. If I get the tag!
Long ways to drive and scout with no tag. Just fishing for advise from someone who has been there before burning points. Thanks

H has a reputation for producing some good bucks but I think it has gone down some in recent years. The wilderness is definitely an obstetrical too but if you are wanting the tag so you can hunt elk with your friend I would assume either he is hunting an area thats not wilderness or he is a resident you could go in the wilderness with. Are you sure the season dates for elk and deer are the same in that unit?

Deer opens earlier than elk, for rifle, but he was going to buy the archery permit and hunt before rifle season. And we are both NR so we won't be able to get into the wilderness.A guide is not in the budget. Sure would be nice to get in the wilderness.

Ok. Its just a good idea to check the season dates for the specific unit or units as they can vary quite alot in some regions. The wilderness rules are definitely an issue to NR's in areas like that.

Welcome to the forum! I have 4 points and was looking into g or h also, but I think I may hold out for a limited quota tag another year and hopefully it will pay off. Where are you from? See your a taxidermist also!

Biggest problem with "H" is you can't hunt the wilderness as a non resident by yourself and that is where most of the hunting is. Thats why most non res do it yourself ers put in for "G". Pretty much same gene pool and lots of public land. I just put in for the special tag today. I have hunted it twice.
